It's like the seemingly obligatory run into the middle on first and goal - even if you're on the 9 yard line. There's some coaching law that says you've got to waste a down up the middle. The same coaching law says that you absolutely must attempt one or two fade route passes on second and third down. Fourth down is the FG attempt.

I hate the fade. I wish someone would do a statistical study that shows how many time the pass is incomplete or intercepted versus the number of times that it results in a catch.

Fade route on 1st down is a solid call from like the 6 yard line. You have like a 33% of scoring a TD from the 6 on first is solid. On 4th down and two point conversions it shows football coaches aren't very smart. Remember when we did the fade route on our 2 pt conversion at ole miss in 2009

It's so low-percentage you'd think that coaches are betting on an interference call, problem is that it's so low-percentage refs won't give it to them.

The fade was pretty much INVENTED for Les Miles type coaches. The idea is that basically, it's a TD or out of bounds unless your QB is a moron. That it is a low percentage play almost seems beside the point for such coaches.

Now, that said, If I've got Megatron type guy, THEN, the fade starts looking OK.

But hell, I've seen coaches run fades to 5'9" WRs. Do you realize how perfect that pass has to be!!!

I've been a big proponent of this for a while now.

Eta: meaning anti-fade route.

I'm not a fan of the fade either. Especially on a two point try.

It is a dumb call - as a LaTech fan, we were burned by this call in our latest matchup against aTm. We had a chance for overtime and blew it in a fade call.

The problem was the pass did not go to a future NFL receiver - the fade pass went to a walk on white kid that had not been in the flow of the game.

You have to give the QB multiple options on that two point play.

It was a shite throw...gotta hit that back side shoulder so the wr can box out the defender

Bingo.

Those that are bashing the coach are just ranting like a woman on the rag. Your bitching just to be bitching. You don't know see the QB and receiver in practice run this fade pattern. Do you really think the coach said " oh what the frick lets run this for the hell of it.

Something I found interesting last year when Ohio State beat Indiana in OT with our then back up Kenny Guiton, Ohio State has a specific play practiced and ready no matter the opponent and agreed to run that play if they ever needed to go for two.

There was an argument among urban and Tom Herman, Herman was screaming that they all agreed to run this play no matter what. It was a skinny bootleg to the right with the right side right end slipping across the flow of the play and releasing into the end zone on the left.

I'm sure other schools do this, but it's almost like practicing a free throw. You know it's gonna be in the center of the field three yards out.

This is my other pet peeve

Every coach does this. They have a pre determined play for a 2 point conversion, which makes sense.

What doesn't make sense is that most of them use the play you are describing a little. We did it in high school, LSU has done it in EVERY two point conversion they've done the past 5 years and it's the same play

Rollout to the right...and I HATE that call. It cuts the field in half when the field is already small! It works about as much as the fade route

Only time I've seen it work was against Tennessee with Jordan Jefferson I think in 2010

Even if manning was your QB, there are tons of other plays with higher chance of success. I've always hated that play. It seems to rarely work.

Exactly. I thought this a while back watching Drew Brees miss jimmy graham on back to back fades from the 2

I'm like "run the frickIN BALL!!!!"

Even with the best matchup and great execution I give it 50/50 at best. Makes no sense at all to me

Basically only a few steps to fake the rollout. The entire play was flowing right and the TE slipped across the play.

It's not what wildcat was describing, it was a counter.

It looks so awesome when it works, but like the midrange jumper in basketball, it's not a wise play statistically for the majority of players.

Excellent analogy.

I hate the fade on a do or die down.

Do or die plays to me should always have a moving pocket or some sort of rollout so the qb has options.

Umm.. the fad route is no different than any other route. Needs a QB to execute

Except by design the qb is committed to the throw immediately. There is no chance to determine if the coverage is too tight...

It leaves no room for ad libbing.

Why would you get rid of half the field in a do or die situation if you want more options?

You're right. All routes need a QB

But The fade route needs a REALLY good QB, a freak athlete at WR, extremely good timing between the two, and a little bit of a lot of luck
