Back in the 1930's - 1970's & into the 80's there were like 10-15 bowl games. You want to really look at historical powers look at who was going to bowls before every 6-6 team in the country got a bowl invite.

Mostly. Only one team in the B1G was allowed to go to a bowl game until 1976 and that bowl was the Rose Bowl. When you realize this it becomes clear why the Rose Bowl is such a revered thing for B1G fans. It was there or bust for a long time.
