When I first read this news, the fact that Elba is black was maybe the 3rd thing that even crossed my mind about it, and it was quickly dismissed as irrelevant. Which it is. The quality of actor is what I was focused on.

Look, the inherent part of Bond is that he is British, as he works for British Intelligence. I, along with almost anyone else would oppose making Bond an American. That's the important part of Bond: he's British. Elba, being British, fits the "racial requirement" of the role. I'd oppose Will Smith, not because he's black, but because he's NOT BRITISH. I'd also oppose, say, Hugh Jackman. Who is Australian.
The whole point of John Shaft is that he is a blaxploitation character. He sort of has to be black, as that's a key identity of his character. Now, could the Danny Glover part in Lethal Weapon be played by a white guy, or an Asian dude, or shudder to think, a WOMAN, in a Lethal Weapon remake? Sure. It's not a key part of the character, as his ethnicity plays no real part in the role.

who the frick cares? there are 179 other bond movies with a white dude people can go back and rewatch if they don't want a black bond. I don't like this thread being here and inviting politards to venture over to the last remaining safe haven on TD. once they come they won't leave

Not really a valid comparison or analogy. The whole character or "ethos" of the Shaft character was highly dependent on being black.

I know people will have their sides in this discussion. It's to be expected.
I just don't like change to what has historically been portrayed a certain way in previous source material.
I had the same objections to the changes to the Fantastic Four, Game of Thrones, casting choices in Gods and Kings, etc.

ok Like I said. I think my comment was taken way too seriously. Elba is a fine actor and I could give two shits if he (or anyone else) plays Bond.
I'll tell you what really pissed me off though. The fact that PJ didn't get an actual hobbit to play Bilbo. And don't get me started on the CGI orcs!! You know how many actual unemployed orcs they could've employed! Would've done wonders for the economy!
