Friend of mine had an interview with Google last week

Said he went in a suit and tie, but the guy who would be his boss wore cargo shorts and a t-shirt to the interview.
Why can't this attitude towards appearance catch on nationwide? For me it's probably because I'm old and have been conditioned by many years in dull office settings.

I imagine that traditional office attire is the standard in every industry but technology and start-ups (which are usually in technology, anyway).

I went to Google here in Atlanta for a meeting. One of the guys we were meeting with, who did the introductions, was wearing a tight fitting tank top. Seriously. He was also extremely hairy.
Oddly enough, I had another meeting at Floyd County Productions (makes Archer and other FX animated shows) and one of the guys there had a similar appearance.

Was the interview for a Google earth car driver?

start ups do it because it helps attract young talent who are willing to work for cheap.
they are not looking for people who are rigid. They're looking for problem-solvers.
seems like most companies would want this.

I recently joined a company with no vacation policy, you can bring your dog to work and there is a ping pong table next to the break area.
Each person has their own space, but there is also a ton of large areas with sofas, oversized chairs and informal type meeting areas people can work.
I think this type of environment really allows people to enjoy being there. Take care of your shite and the company takes care of you.

As in you can take off whenever you want, or you can never take off?

Take off whenever you want, as long as your shite is done. Seems most people take 5-6 wks a yr.

Are you serious? You can have fun earning and building up all that time so when you quit you can cash out big time!

What obscure questions did they ask him?
Stuck in a blender? Golf balls in a school bus? What?

Because some professional environments dictate that you present a professional appearance. If you just show up wearing cargoes, to many that would signify that you don't give a frick and aren't taking the meeting seriously.
