I've never had much reason to watch the bengals, because they're the bengals, and only do now because of Jeremy Hill, so the "who dey" chant was new to me. they even claim they invented it in 1981, which is complete bullshite (as I explain HERE).

did the entire world know about this except me, because im pretty annoyed by it.

Ask anybody.

They did "invent" Who Dey in '81. But we were using Who Dat before then and it's actually been around since the 1800s. It was a reply to a knock in old minstrel shows that played down here.

Who Dat?

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not but I don't think we did. I was arguing with Bengal fans on reddit last night and one linked this New York Times article. among other things it says:

"...(who dey) had been made popular by 1981 in Bengals fans’ cheers for their team during their run to Super Bowl XVI ... The phrase was widely used by Bengals fans in 1981. The phrase was widely used by Saints fans in 1983."

that means the Bengals started it somewhere between September of '81 and January 24, 1982. let's just say it was September.

that article also links another article saying the Saints might have gotten it from LSU football who used it in 1982. This still puts the Bengals one year ahead.

what it fails to mention is that LSU basketball used it during the 1980-81 season, as you can hear in this absolutely horrifying song

LSU made the Final Four that season, this incessant fricking song was everywhere, and it can't be from any later than March of '81 because it mentions players like Rudy Macklin, Ethan Martin, and Greg Cook, who were all seniors.

its also worth noting that LSU played Xavier (which is in Cincinnati) that season, on December 22, 1980.

if nothing else, Louisiana is ahead by at least 6 months on this, and it seems more likely that Saints fans got it from LSU basketball in '80-81 than Cincinnati years later.

so maybe Bengals fans heard it during the Xavier game, or maybe during the Final Four, but both seem more likely than them independently making up a nearly identical phrase just a few months after LSU did.

Doesn't matter. The two phrases may be close to each other in meaning, but they are still different phrases. Whoever said or did it first is a moot point. They say "Who Dey", we say "Who Dat". I don't care who was first or last to the party, fact is it doesn't matter.

Only thing matters at this point is one team is going to the playoffs and the other is not.

What do they say after?

Are they asking who's gonna beat them?

I think it's more of a "Who are they?!" type of question. Like, that's not the terrible team I know, "Who Dey?"

It's a less agitating phrase, compared to "Who Dat?", which then follows it up by taunting the other team. Not complaining, just trying to be objective about the two phrases.

Back in 1793, there was a cincinnati plantation owner named Ick Key Woulds, he first said "Who dey be coming around that mountain when dey come". That is where it all started, a fellow who heard him said that later moved to New Orleans, actually got traded, and he started the phrase Who dat be over dere.

this was my opening sentence:

"ive never had much reason to watch the bengals, because they're the bengals, and only do now because of Jeremy Hill, so the 'who dey' chant was new to me."

was that not clear? should I re-write it in all caps and with blinking arrows pointing at it?

No. I never watch the Bengals either and knew they did that chant. Most Saints fans already know that because we think they stole it. Maybe you are new to Saints Talk.
