For the first time this season, LSU had no players play over 35 minutes of action. That is indicative of the control LSU had on this game. Jarell Martin was unable to warm-up due to being in a car accident while driving to the game, but he was still able to lead the Tigers in scoring with 18 points. Jordan Mickey added another double double scoring 15, rebounding 10 and blocking 6 shots. Hornsby rounded out the double figure scoring with 11 of his own. Starting point guard Josh Gray was once again held out of action.

LSU has looked convincingly better as December has moved on. It is indicative in their Ken Pommeroy Algorithmic Ranking that has moved LSU from 95th at the beginning of the month to 53rd after last night's victory. LSU received 7 votes in the AP Poll yesterday, good enough for 33rd. LSU's RPI (ESPN) is 21 and their BPI is 34. They are even being shown as an 8 seed in many bracketologies. While NCAA Tournament bids aren't won in December, many are lost; and LSU has done nothing but help their case with their recent 6 game winning streak.

LSU led from start to finish in this one and their first half defense was about as good as we've seen the past 3 years. The Tigers held Charleston to 15 first half points and only allowed Charleston 0.64 points per possession easily the best this season. It was also Charleston's lowest point total and per possession numbers of the season, including games against UCONN, Texas A&M, West Virginia, and Davidson.

Offensively, LSU went to the basket early and often. They were able to force 29 free throw attempts, the most they've had all season. LSU also was able to hit 6 of 13 from three point range. LSU outrebounded the Cougars 43-34 and forced them to shoot only 27.3% from the three point line.

Jalyn Patterson had another very solid game in the absence of Josh Gray. He led the team with 4 assists and 3 steals, both career highs. Over the last 4 games, Patterson is averaging 3.25 assists to only 1.00 turnover a game. LSU also got significant minutes from Elbert Robinson, who looked very comfortable passing out of the post. He had 3 assists and only 1 turnover. He also added 5 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 steals, and 2 points.

The topping on the cake may have been the last 4 minutes where LSU was able to give extended minutes to the walkons. Both Brandon Eddlestone and Henry Shortess hit three's bringing the PMAC crowd to their feet.

This team still plays sloppy...
Need to clean it up in the coming weeks

good to see some walkons get some action and contribute.

Definitely. I kept saying to myself, man we are playing good basketball, but Im not happy about the 5 turnovers... Then it was the 10 turnovers.... THen it was 15 turnovers...

Still, I was really happy with the performance. I think Quarterman has struggled the last two games, but he should get back to early season form when Gray joins him on the court.

I was really pleased with Elbert who hadn't played in a while. He looked like a better option than Odo as a big man in the post.

I am too. Gotta keep improving, but they are really coming together. Crazy to think how well we've played the last two games without Gray. We will be even better with him back on the court. Blessing in disguise, cause we were able to find Patterson as a viable option.

It was probably because we were playing with a big lead, but I didn't like all the turnovers last night. A really solid win otherwise.

That was really the only downside of the night. This team still makes a ton of silly mental errors for which Jones apparently holds no one accountable for. Those things don't hurt you against a team like Charleston, but if there is no emphasis on getting them fixed now, they could/will bite you in the arse against SEC teams. I wish they would be a little bit smarter with the ball. Even Quarterman, who is usually LSU's most savy player, was sloppy last night.

Otherwise, the defensive execution was good. Hopefully that continues. Robinson didn't score, but he showed some good court vision in the post. Odo can't catch, so Robinson should have an opportunity to re-gain his starting position over the next two games.

I wouldn't be surprised if Quarterman sits out next Monday. If Gray wasn't hurt I think he would have missed at least one game last/this week

No mention of the possession where Mickey got 3 straight blocks? Then the next possession got another one to make it 4 blocked shots in a row for CoC?

I was giddy right then... After a slow start blocking shots, Mickey has reeled off 7 and 6 in his last two games...

He's up to 3.2 BPG after averaging 3.1 last year. It will be harder for him to keep that average up thru SEC play, but he has been much more active defensively lately.

Having the starting point guard out is going to bump the TO numbers up every time. Hopefully the TO situation will improve with Gray back.

Is the Josh Gray injury a blessing in disguise for this teams depth? Seems like this is great for Patterson and even TQ to get more time handling the ball. If he comes back at 100% for SEC play and we don't pick up a loss, I say it was a damn good injury.

We look really good in spurts, and really sloppy in spurts. There were times in that game where it was like a pick up game out there

I have the impression that coach Jones doesn't want to play without Gray and TQ. I would like to see one of the next couple of games with Patterson running everything, but I am way more confident with backups in the game than Jones.

Hopefully Gray comes back before sec play and TQ gets to rest some more.

Patterson could be very important in both pushing Gray and possibly eclipsing him next year. I would like to see Eddelstone get more minutes and wonder if Speights couldn't help as well.

I think he will be back next week. Will want to get some of the rust off before SEC play.

TQ's 6 TOs vs a bad Charleston team is concerning.

He needs to tighten up.

I was very encouraged by his play. He's obviously not all the way there yet, but his passing was an especially welcome site.
