If he can cover and rush the passer fine. If not we have Jordan, Galette, and Edebali (plus our big boys) that can rush.

We don't need another one dimensional pass rusher.

NFL Draft Geek had this to say:
quote:

Last year the Saints thrived in their switch to the 3-4, but this year Rob Ryan's crew has gone back to a base 4-3 with mostly nickel sets. The results have been disastrous. Apparently they don't feel they have three linebackers who are good enough to play consistently, so if Rob Ryan still has a job next year you can bet it will be on the top of their priority list to get some playmaking linebackers. No better solution would be adding the nation's most dynamic pass rusher in the lightning quick Shane Ray. Thanks to a lethal first step and non-stop energy, Ray led the SEC in sacks with 12.5. Taking Ray and moving Junior Gallette back to OLB would allow the Saints to go back to the 3-4 with two qualified edge rushers.

Why? Soft coverage giving up quick passes. You can't rush if you aren't given time. And we need to learn how to draw holding calls. Other guys fall down and get them. We refuse to go down. So many missed holding calls against Galette because he'd rather rush while getting bent backwards than go down.

The scheme and play calling was terrible this year. The players are fine.

Uh... Galette played standing a lot more this year than last year. We played almost no 3-4 last year (3-3-5 with 3 safeties mostly). We played a shite ton of traditional 3-4 and 4-3 (depending on if Galette was standing or not) this year as opposed to 75% nickel last year.

So he's saying we should draft a Galette and move Galette to OLB where he can't cover and will mostly be rushing.

Nope. We need someone that can cover first. If they can rush that is a bonus. Whoever wrote that has no clue what the frick they are talking about.

We definitely need a lot more coverage. Lewis seems to be the only guy

Giants won 2 Superbowls with a average at best LB corps and stacked DL's....there is always room for another.

"When you study Ray on tape, you see a lot of the same qualities Suggs had as a pass rusher coming out of college," the coach told NFL.com.

Ray has produced 14 sacks and 20.5 tackles for loss this season and was voted first-team All-American and SEC defensive player of the year by the Associated Press.

. He's an active and disruptive force against the run, making a lot of plays in pursuit, and he has a relentless motor." Ray currently has an SEC-high 14.5 sacks.

Can he do anything besides rushing the passer? Those guys have one of the highest bust percentages because pass rush in college is not the same as in the pros. Jarvis Jones was supposed to be killing it(2 solo tackles a game and 1 sack every 3 games(3 total)).

"And if Ray needs to move to outside linebacker, he should have no problem making the transition. There will be questions about his coverage capabilities, of course, but he looks like he'll be comfortable playing in space. And if it takes time to develop in pass coverage, no worries. Teams can afford have patience as they'll just unleash him as a primary pass rusher until he's ready to do more."

all I can find on it.

How in the hell do you feel you have no linebackers to play 3-4 when it's the same crew from last year, that was supposed to be improved.

Do not want. We can do better than just a pass rusher, especially with a high pick. You don't go one dimensional with those.

We need someone that can cover first and foremost, and then could develop into a good pass rusher. We have two of the opposites in Galette and Edebali.

Whoever wrote that has no clue what they are talking about. We rarely played a "base" defense last year, and when we did it was usually with 4 down linemen, not 3.

This year we actually played a respectable amount of base 3-4, especially the last 2 games. That's due to our secondary sucking more this year.

I have to admit, even though physically they may have not been good Jenkins and Harper made a big difference in at least getting guys lined up.

He is the sexy pick till everyone starts updating their draft boards and in depth evaluations start leaking. Around combine time we will have a better idea of who is on the Saints shortlist...right now I feel like a stoner walking through the grocery store...everything looks good.

Yeah I here ya. But I'm sure if you go back and look at those top sack guys from college, many of them are likely to be busts.

I was calling Clowney a bust and in 4 games he didn't have a sack. He may be done after needing micro fracture surgery so we may never know for sure. But that's two years in a row the "top" pass rusher has not lived up to his billing.

I think Tampa will be thinking the same thing... As of now they hold a better draft pick than the saints so why win?.... :
