Decanters: who use them?

I received a large wide bottom decanter with a ball "cork" as a gift. I drink a lot of whiskey and the occasional red wine. I don't have expensive tastes. How do I use this thing? I see that it helps to contain the sediments in the original bottle and it helps aerate the wine. And i see it can often help improve the wine even if it is cheap.
Any particular wines you've tried that get good benefit frm this? How long can to keep the wine in there before it goes bad? Any benefit to using it with liquor? How do you clean it without getting a weird after taste?

I use them for red wine. you are supposed to let it breathe for 1-2 hours before serving and it can sit out all day
we used one for a party last night and it worked great. does it work? I want to think it does, it looks nice at least. give it a shot

Tight red cabs need to breathe before serving. Yes, decanters work for this. Depends on the wine how long it will last but most go bad after a week in a decanter or bottle after opening.

I use a decanter for older red wines that will have sediment in the bottle, and young red wines that are very tannic. I've also used them in the past to store scotch, purely for decorative reasons.

I use my decanter for good Cabernets.
To clean it, I just rinse with water and let it dry. If you need more than just water, a baby bottle scrubber is useful.

A glass pitcher from WalMart can work just as well, but, yeah, decanting does serve a purpose with certain beverages.
