I need some advice. My wife and/or kids left my outside freezer open about a 1/2 inch i'd say. Time left is unknown. Few days at least. There was enough temperature difference to cause the area around the ice bin to sweat and refreeze as well as the surface of the popscicles in the front. The main concern is all the homemade sausage and my big arse gumbo i was saving along with the stuffed pork tenderloins and if they are ruined. They are all still frozen solid but i can't gaurantee they did not defrost a bit at somepoint and then refroze around the edges. In your opinions, am i safe to eat this or am i out all my fricking homemade sausage and gumbo??

Thanks for the help.

I had the same thing happen to me about 2 months ago and everything in there was fine. Granted, it was only open for about 18-24 hours though.

The meat wouldn't defrost from the door being open and then refreeze while the door is still open, it would only refreeze after is was closed and allowed the temp to drop again. If the meat is still frozen solid I think you're good.

I would take 1 pack of sausage out and try it.

It sounds like nothing ever thawed. If the meat was still frozen when you found the freezer with the door still open, my intuition tells me the meat never thawed. It takes hours for meat to thaw at temps above freezing, chances are your freezer probably never got above freezing. It just worked like hell over that time period.

This. Is it a chest freezer?

FYI. Put a lock on the door if it doesn't already have one to prevent this or a small kid climbing in it.

I bought a freezer alarm from Amazon for $11.00. It's not very loud but my freezer is by the back door so I walk by it multiple times a day.

Won't help in this situation, but freeze a cup of water then put a penny on top of the frozen water, if you check it and the penny is not still on top and is somewhere lower in the cup you know things have defrosted and re frozen, especially helpful at camps and such that may have power disruptions for several says that no one is aware of.

Seems there was a case several years ago where a veterinarian from BR went to his camp and warmed up some stew or something he cooked a few weeks earlier, un benost to him the power had been out for a few days the stew spoiled and refroze, he ate it and passed away

Great advice in this thread. Gonna buy the alarm and use the penny trick.

Even if they partly defrosted and re-froze, they'll be fine.

You are fine. Just cook it well, reheat your gumbo to a simmer.

After inspection it looked like nothing unfroze. That compressor worked like hell
