I'm in recovery...the general definition of an alcoholic that we go by is...if once drinking, you cannot control how much you drink and/or if given an honest attempt to stop drinking all together, you are unable to.

Also, if he is powerless oover booz or his life is unmanageable.

It's really hard to just label someone alcoholic with out a ton of details. This guy seems like he's an isolated drinker which is tough to judge. Sounds like a "functioning alcoholic" to me, which normally ends up being a full blown once the consequences set in. Hopefully it's just a phase for him though.

How do you know he is the one drinking it all?
He might have friends over all the time to play poker or watch movies. A 1/5 between two or three people isn't too much.
Or perhaps he's buying it for some kids next door that are blackmailing him.

Edited to say: If he has people over to play Magic every night he probably wouldn't let his brah friends know.

Maybe not of all time, but very possibly a troll. I gave a legit answer just in case the alky friend exists. Somehow, I doubt it.
