When do you know that someone is an alcoholic?

And when would a group of friends decide to stage an intervention?
We have a friend that drinks a lot, but he's normal acting. He can go a few days without drinking and be fine. He can even go out and eat and to a bar etc., and only have a beer or a mixed drink or two. He conducts himself very well, no DUI's or bar fights, etc. But he drinks probably at least a 1/5th a night. We think he drinks at lunch sometimes too because he has to go home for no apparent reason, and he has seemed on occasion a little bit loopy afterwads. (He is divorced, no kids, part time girlfriend.)
I think it's probably mainly out of boredom, but I rode with him the other day to the LQ, and he cruised right by the drive through speaker and pulled up to the window. They opened the window and told him the price, and he gave them exact change. They gave him his stuff, and said see you tomorrow.
He's not hurting anyone or drunk texting etc. or doing anything crazy when he drinks. He doesn't really go out, just stays home and drinks I guess, and apparently a lot.

Sounds like he is doing fine. Leave him alone.

Half a case per day

I would leave it alone. Usually you step in when it starts messing with their life and the lives of others.

I don't think it needs to affect his work or social life to be a problem. If he's drinking that much per day, he is jeopardizing his health inmensely.

I always figured it was when someone changes for the worse when they drink.
Then that's a problem for anyone around them.

This is probably the number 1 reason for addiction in a broad way. It's an inability to enjoy oneself without the substance.

Probably not, but if it's someone you care about, it's tough to not say anything.

At his house, his trash can usually has about 4-5 empty fifths in it. A small trash can. Most people take their trash out at least once a week if not every couple of days.
My friend pointed it out to me when we were over there. He made a joke and asked when was the last time he took out his trash, and he said a couple of days ago. Why? Does it stink?
We didn't say anything, but dayum. And he had just stopped and picked up a fifth on our way over there.
At least a fifth a night.

What's a LQ, and if it's not affecting his professional or social life - whats the big deal?
