Having children in developed countries is more expensive. There is a concentration on quality over quantity. Having more kids increases the odds of more surviving to adulthood in harsher environments in developing countries. In developed countries surviving to adulthood isn't as much of an issue. Putting enough money into education and stuff is the issue, so more energy needs to be spent on the individual child. This is the incentive for having less children.

Those poors don't realize they could work 60 hours a week for fifty years before retiring and dying lonely. I feel so bad for them with their numerous loved ones, ample free time, oneness with nature, etc.
If only they know the pleasure of "owning" a shiny new vehicle every 3 years and running up credit card debt.
I wonder if in those countries they ever wonder why Americans are so materialistic that they give up most of their time, forego procreation, etc and end up needing a cabinet of drugs to not go crazy.
I'm not saying I want to go without health care and clean water, but there are two sides to everything.
