Generally, there is a reason these songs are hits.

Just means they aren't a big music fan in general. It's not that big of a deal.
To some music is a huge part of our lives. I use it as a memory trigger a lot. Other people have art, or whatever else. Whatever keeps you going.

Exactly. Everyone has their own level of engagement. I only look at people squirrelly when they say they don't like music. Like, any kind. that's just odd to me.

I don't associate with people who like bands that have hits.

I mean, I really don't give a shite... but if someone goes on about loving a band and all they know is their hits... I probably wouldn't take their musical opinion too seriously.. But, I think its OK to like a band and only like what they've heard or know.. i think the grand majority of people don't seek out music on their own..

Now, for the people that try to wax poetically, in an effort to seem cool, on certain "obscure-isn" music and all they know is the greatest hits type of songs... I just laugh

My favorite in this vein is when some old head from the 70s/80s talks about how big a Pink Floyd fan they are, and after just a little bit of talking to them you realize they think there really is someone named Pink Floyd that leads the band. I've had that happen several times over the years

Oh by the way, which one's Pink?

That guy Led Zeppelin is so awesome!

I feel the same way about men who say they don't like sports, of any kind.

Does fishing count? 'Cause outside of that, I don't care about sports.

Fishing with a cork and a beer in your hand does not count as a sport

How about people who list their favorite bands, which include "Lynerd Skynerd" and "led Zeplin"

I doubt I could name very many songs by my favorite artists. I know them by sound but with the downfall of the CD, most music I listen to I have no way to see the song name unless I look at my computer screen or phone.

Hopefully someone who only likes the hits of bands they claim to love doesn't give a shite what you or I think, and keep on doing what makes them happy.

Speaking of Smashing Pumpkins, there's a band that has many songs I like, but I've never taken the time to look beyond what most people know. No idea why. Foo as well.

Same here. Usually I'll sample a few of a groups more obscure songs and if I don't like them, I'll stop digging. Laziness perhaps. As you stated earlier, there's usually a reason some songs are popular and others aren't.

I love a lot of Rush songs, and some of the ones I like the most aren't the most popular but honestly have never listened to their whole library. Same with Pink Floyd. I just don't have the patience to dig through a bunch of meh...to find the spectacular.
