The ulterior motive behind this move is the hope that one day, a more just, open and prosperous Cuba would have the resources to pay some of that back to you.

Keeping Cuba dirt poor is a guarantee that your family will never see a dime.

As I stated in my previous post, there should be some conditions attached to the embargo lifting -- namely, no more military assistance to North Korea and no Russian military or intelligence-gathering bases in Cuba.

We can make it clear that the USA will no longer engage in any covert or overt operations designed to overthrow the Castro Regime. In return, Cuba stops acting like an enemy of the USA. After those terms are met and demonstrated, Congress lifts the embargo.

Honestly, I wouldn't have a problem with this. These seem like reasonable terms.

great move by Obama. That is some low arse hanging fruit that needed to be plucked decades ago.

History will remember this well - what an easy decision. Anybody who has even the slightest faith in capitalism should have absolutely zero qualms about this.

All you do is make will accusations, questioning someone's intelligence or motives.

You're obviously incapable of rational debate.

Hope Santa's good to you.

Great news....but Americans are going to be shocked when they go looking for investment opportunities and find that the Canadians and Europeans have had that shite sewed up for years.

I also predict that in 10 years you won't be able to give away a Cuban cigar. Their only allure was their ban.....the. Cuban cigar industry has fallen WAAAAAYYYYYY behind the Honduran, Dominican, Nicaraguan and even the Mexican....and the US cigar is a superior product.

It will be interesting though to see the cars being bought and shipped back to the states....that is the bonanza that is going to happen.....very small potatoes but some will make a little money.

There is also a serious lack of sport fishing infrastructure in Cuba...it is there but begs development. That will be a pretty good opportunity also.

Cuba Looks like it would be a great retirement plan however....great health care and the dollar goes a long way.

I have yet to hear one rational argument against this. Way passed due. Hell, Clinton normalised relations with Vietnam years ago.......

Cuba can now perhaps have a better chance to rebuild its infrastructure in a more economically sound manner with better control over its own destiny, especially if it has better alternatives to the IMF and World Bank.

I think Cuba is making a calculated move to be on the right side of the next cold war, honestly.

Here's my problem - if Puerto Rico hasn't exploded as a tourist destination, and they're actually part of the U.S., why do we romanticize about a Cuba that hasn't existed in over 50 years - the tourist Cuba that was created by the U.S. mafia.

Here's my prediction - this is going to end badly when more people realize how fricked up Cuba is and it is the Castros' fault that it is so fricked up.

Yet they will blame us for it.

What are you talking about? Plenty of people, particularly from the Northeast go and vacation in Puerto Rico. I've gone and vacationed in Puerto Rico this year.

Meh - PR draws about 4 million, give or take. Dominican Republic gets almost 5 million. Just Miami Beach in Florida draws 14 million and change. Cuba is sitting under 3 million, right now.

So, I predict it will surge by 2 million or so for a couple of years (newness) - people will invest a little money (if Cuba even allows it) and then people will realize it is a shitty Stalinist run country stuck in 1958 (and not in a good way), and go back to their nicer Caribbean locations.

There is a reason why people go to DR (and they are kicking arse in tourism, right now) and not Haiti - I mean it is the same island, after all. The main difference is that DR has a stable government and political system, and makes efforts to provide a safe and enticing tourist destination. Haiti is a corrupt, dangerous, 3rd world shithole and, apparently, they like it that way.
