We have a dresser that we would like to sand and refinish but i have no idea if that's possible. The dresser is heavy as phuck so my assumption is that it's real wood.

TIA for any help.

You can't tell if it's real wood or MDF?

You can use "chaulk paint" to refinish just about anything without sanding. Look into it.

Look at the corners and see if you can see a fine line that is very thinly over the edges of the wood. If there is a thin layer on the surface of the wood then that is a vaneer covering. If it looks solid throughout, then, you can sand the hell out of it. You can refinish a veneer but, it is harder and damages easily.

I prefer chemical stripper and then a sanding. It works better. Go to youtube for how to videos.

Check drawers, bottom, or inside edges. If you see wood grain and not flaky particle board/mdf, you can likely refinish it.

I have a desk and a bookshelf that is nice and heavy as shite, but still MDF.

you can always refinish it, as long as it is not something like particle board with some wood grain print stucl over it...

just look at the edges of the drawer faces or something like that to see if you can see layers in the wood...

A lot of time would be spent on an ugly dresser

Looks like quarter sawn oak. They did make quarter sawn oak veneer. Be careful, that looks like a nice piece!

Go for it. That's a lot of work, but do your thing!

Why would it be a lot of work? Because of the layers of wood I would have to sand to get to a finishable grain?

I wouldn't "learn" on a piece of furniture that has meaning. Could ruin it.

That is all veneer. Post a pic of the backside of a drawer and I can tell if it was quality construction. The backside of the drawer faces should have same grain pattern as the front if it is solid wood. Also the underside of the top, looking up from inside of dresser would be the same way. But I bet it's plywood with veneer.

It's not a Duncan Phyfe.

If you want to rebuild an early 50s Plymouth Cranbrook, that's the equivalent.

I hate chalk paint with a flaming passion and will be happy when the trend dies. People are snatching up good pieces and slapping slate blue chalk on every fricking thing.

yep, you can refinish that...gonna be a good bit of work, though. If the dresser doesn't have some sort of sentimental value, it is probably not worth messing with unless you just like to do that kind of thing...
