Russia’s central bank has hiked the country’s benchmark interest rate to 17pc, just days after raising it to 10.5pc, in a bid to stop a full-blown currency crisis.

This makes me very nervous. Destabilizing the country that possesses half the world's nuclear arsenal is a dangerous game.

We are not destabilizing it, the Russians (well, their leaders anyway) themselves are.

Barely, I worked with the nonprofliferation team at Los Alamos for a while and you would be amazed at how many close calls there were. Probably the only thing that kept nukes out of the hands of terrorist and rogue states was our policy of paying a huge sum of money to the Russian for those nukes..

I thought Bad Vlad P was the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Surely his recent incursions didn't backfire. He shite on Obama's head!

And not because they are trying to jam Russia, but because they want poorly leveraged fracking in the US out of business.
So, in essence, private business through shale oil in America has destabilized Putin's government, once again proving that a free market is far more effective a vehicle of change than diplomacy.

I must say I originally thought he played the better hand with Obama. Now it is looking like the Ukraine invasion and helping Syria isn't so smart.

Obama's playing checkers.
Putin's waving his dick at the chessboard.
Unfortunately the size of his dick is directly tied to the price of crude oil.

I'm not saying it has anything to do with Obama being a foreign policy savant. It has more to do with the incredible power of the United States' economy and financial markets relative to the rest of the world.
However, that is a big stick to yield, and Obama's Treasury Department did put the clamps on Bad Vlad when he started acting up, so kudos to them for that.

Most on this board thought he played the better hand. Not so many will be willing to admit they were wrong in their Putin worship. Kudos to you for that.

So you're saying we should take a Russian vacay this summer?
What the hookers and blow situation like over there?

To be fair, Russia is also getting hammered by OPEC's decision to keep oil prices low. Kind of a perfect storm situation.
I'd never suggest the big oil majors and the U.S. government put the pressure on the Saudis behind the scenes to drop the price and pseudo-sacrificed U.S. shale in the process.

You can't suggest that because Saudi Arabia doesn't care about anything other than protecting their own pocket. This is a long play for them to knock some shale producers out of the market while betting this boom doesn't have a ton of wind under its sails.
I'd put my money on the big oil majors to continue innovating, but this certainly isn't some conspiratorial event to thwart Putin. Exxon would love to keep Putin in office if it meant a better bottom line.

I know. I just want to pretend there's some super secret high-level chicanery going on.
