Yes, it's called The Top Six Records Get Into The Playoffs.
That's still not perfect because it doesn't account for the varying strengths of schedule between the teams whose records are being compared.
If you want to do it as "top six records get into the playoffs" then you'd have to eliminate divisions, otherwise a team in a dogshit division gets 6 easy games in a season whereas a team in a competitive division gets 6 hard ones.

A lot of fans have never supported the division system, in any sport, for just that reason. There will always be years where a team with a better record stays home while a team with a lesser record proceeds to the postseason.
May not be fair but it does allow for teams to remain in the race longer than they might have otherwise and provide their fans reason to watch the games.

The league gets so much out of this current formate and the accompanying debate. They've always wanted huge focus on divisional match ups.
This week, you've got a few divisional games that will weigh heavily into the playoff picture.
No division in the NFC is settled. In week 16.
The NFL isn't going to mess with that.

Philly the team most likely to get left out of the playoffs has only won 2 games against teams with winning records
Dallas and Indy
They also happen to be 3-3 with Mark Sanchez under center
All Mighty Dallas has only beaten 2 teams with a winning record as well.
Seattle and Philly
Considering 1 of their wins came against the other...who is to say if either is really even that good...
Terrible Crappy New Orleans has beaten just as many elite teams as them with less wins to choose from.
Green Bay and Pittsburgh(Both have SB resume's in recent history)

I am a Saints fan. It's not about the Saints or this year. It's just more likely to generate discussion this season, on this board, than any other time.
I hope the Saints go on to win the Superbowl, but I would support a rule change at any future point that they wanted to look at it.
The time to talk about it is when your team benefits from it, instead of sounding like a bitch when your team might get squeezed out because of it.

This 3rd wildcard team would only be the second or third best team in their division that failed to be better than the first two wildcard teams who didn't even win their division and that does not deserve a playoff spot over an actual division winner that proved its the best team in its division fair and square.
The format right now is perfect. I didn't complain when Seattle hosted in 2010 and they proved they belonged as a division winner beating the saints who were only the second best team in their division.

The NFL is DIVISION CENTRIC. Stop whining. The season is an outlier, no there is no need to change the importance of the division.
The expanded playoffs that will materialize will offset the rarity of a sub .500 or even a .500 division winner.

I agree. The nfl playoff system is not designed for that. It's designed to win your division and it means something.
You can't base a true ranking in the nfl when every division plays each other twice and not every body plays each other.
This isn't about a polling system. It's about winning your division regardless how great or shitty it may be. There's no reason to change anything at all.

Wild card teams are fortunate to be in to begin with. They don't win their division then that's tough titty. Some years their division will be easier. It's absolutely stupid to start making more rules and more numbers games. It's simple, win your division or you travel.. Period. We had to do it and we lost in what truly could have been another super bowl team..

Exactly and that is what is most annoying. ESPN will make it an agenda to push for change if the Saints were to beat say Seattle at home this year.. Yet when Seattle did it with a losing record no one outside of Saints fans cared.

The college comparison to this argument was the SEC this year: SEC West was stacked and beat up each other yet the SECW winner (survivor) had to play the SECE winner in the SEC championship game. The SECE sucked all season but the system still allowed a lesser opponent to have the opportunity to take it to the next level on any given Saturday or Sunday.
This year in the NFL still remains an anomaly. You don't change the system to accommodate one atypical season and one atypical division race.

in 2001 if you remember a barely ranked LSU team won the SEC West and beat a team projected to go to the National Title game...the SEC East looked like this that season
#4 Tennessee 11–2
#3 Florida 10–2
#13 South Carolina 9–3
#22 Georgia 8–4
