I keep seeing interesting tom Clancy novels on audible and a lot of them say "Jack Ryan, book 13," and so on. Do I have to read the Jack Ryan series books in order or is each novel a separate entity that can be enjoyed without having read the previous ones?

They all start fresh with a new adventure. Some damn good reads in that collection. Enjoy.

If by all you mean none, but most won't leave you clueless from not reading in order, then yes, they all start fresh.

There are clear exceptions though, the "worst" probably being Debt of Honor and Executive Orders, which could almost be one absurdly long book.

I definitely recommend reading them in order. There are a lot of characters that span the length of the series and you need to know the back story.

Read them in release order. That's not chronological order. You appreciate the stories more knowing Jacks backstory. There's a lot of references to previous events that you won't get if you cherry pick them. Besides, his older Cold War books are fantastic.

Red Storm Rising is an amazing book. I'Ve read it twice. It happens outside of the Jack Ryan universe.
