It all comes down to the application pool. If we're offering a $500,000k desk job in the finance world, the applicants are going to be stronger candidates and you can pick from the most qualified. These morons are being selected out of a group that wants to make $35,000 a year and be shot at. Nobody with stronger qualifications will do that, so they're forced to choose from dregs with nothing better to apply for.

How do you feel about the articles showing BRPD officers making over 100k?

How many of those are newly hired?

ETA: And how much of that is regular salary and not working extra hours?

As a whole, the Baton Rouge metro's law enforcement leaves much to be desired. I think a merged setup to cover the entire parish under an elected Sheriff would be very beneficial, but politically impossible.

Isn't EBRSO in pretty bad shape to? If so, how does putting two bad agencies together make one good one?

...because Baton Rouge has some shitty cops?

They aren't the only city in the country that is scrapping the barrel to staff their police force with decent applicants and they are far from the only department with poor leadership.

Nah, the cops are just one of the dozens of reasons.

No idea, but I do know that when people throw around the 35k a year figure, they're not seeing what's really going on. 35k is like BRPD's probationary salary range for when they have people in the academy, which is pretty nice IMO since as far as I know alot of places around the country don't have paid academies. With built-in overtime, state supplemental pay, and regular raises I'm pretty sure the average officer is in the 40-45k range within the first year or so and steadily increasing after that, and that's before working voluntary overtime or security jobs or whatever else. I don't think that's too shabby for a 21 year old but .

How dare those police officers shoot that man. He was just shooting at them because he was scared. What time does the riot start?

Well crap. This obviously justifies shooting the family dog for growling at you and ordering an obviously drunk man to drive a car so you can execute him for kicks.

Thanks for that. BRPD is awesome. Good job guys!

Its laughable that anyone would suggest that EBRSO should take over the entire city. They are as bad as BRPD if not worse.

Yep

I know a woman who was was date raped in high school and she went to the sheriffs to report it. After she described the rape, one of the deputies said "oh yeah, I've done that"

And for the record, BRPD is without a doubt the worst in the state.

Yep.

I used to think NOPD was. But if you think of it in terms of interactions with citizens per day - the NOPD is constantly dealing with 10X more shite than the BRPD could ever dream of. If the BRPD tried to deal with Carnival they would wind up executing 1 out of 10 tourists before Endymion rolled, and the rest would all be dead or in jail before Mardi Gras day.. The NOPD's problem is (mostly) sheer incompetence - the BRPD's problem is they are a bunch of lawless thugs who are no better than your average street gang.

My inlaws neighborhood has a warning sign that says "Warning - this area is patrolled by Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Department" - or some shite like that. THat warning is not just for criminals. Its for anyone. Anyone they deem to frick with.

TO be clear - I hate the BRPD. If I haven't made that known as of yet.

But I think 40-45k is hardly a luxurious salary for a cop. Even if they are just 21. granted - the BRPD are a bunch of lawless thugs. BUT - let's pretend they were actually decent human beings. 1) BR has high crime. 2) Cops work shitty fricking hours. 3) The consequences for failure are much higher. (Your typical 21 year old fricks up a pizza order if they fail, for instance) 4) Further, there are laws that make it difficult or impossible for them to strike like ordinary workers. If the BRPD got a pay raise tomorrow - I would not complain. Those few BRPD who are honest decent human beings deserve it (however few there are. 20? 10? 2?) The PAY isn't the problem. The BRPD and Sheriff's as an institution and the Shitty - Parish government who allow them to operate are the problem.
