If by "pan out" you mean making the transition from assistant to head coach then Kliff Kingsbury is a great example. The amount of hype generated by him we were left thinking national championships within a couple of years. The jury is still out on Sumlin. I personally think Gene Chizik is a fraud who has profited off of other coaches players. Larry Fedora has fallen off the face of the Earth. Bo Pelini was an ok coach. You knew what you were getting out him. In the days of high powered offenses he was never going to be a 12-1/11-2 coach. 9 wins was what you'd expect out of him. I think Jim Mora Jr. is overhyped & and IMO he's in the easiest conference to win. Watching PAC-12 football is literally watching glorified 2 hand touch. Tuberville does not fit the criteria. Coaching took a toll on his family and he in a way kinda gave up to save his family. His wife was sleeping with other men at their condo on 30-A outside Sandestin. He's only gonna go after low pressure coaching positions.

Skip won at UConn and ECU in between he was a OC at Carolina

So I think he has panned out. He took Tech to a CCG also.

Petrino and Pelini came close, but both flamed out before they could achieve greatness.

Takes a lot of self-discipline (Saban) and/or remaining grounded (Miles) to last in this business, no matter how good you may seem at it.

Petrino

His story isn't finished yet, and though his off-field storylines have greatly sidetracked his career/life, his on field productivity before and after the debacle, have been very solid.

Unlike others in the thread and/or your post, CBP is well meeting expectations on the gridiron, questionable traits or not.

And whether just social career ploy, or true 'coming to Jesus', his words and actions since seem contrite.
