Does it make sense for new DC / OC to not start before the bowl game?

Not much time for big improvement, and if you lose the game fans are already a little disappointed. Better to wait until after and start fresh with an excited fanbase?
Otis Franklin being the exception in 08 of course, as he started strong and went downhill.

Can't implement much, but a few wrinkles could be good. I think the biggest key is that by not hiring a coach, NCAA rules allow the HC to have more visits. Plus it's right before signing day.

I see no reason for Auburn to lose to Wisconsin* if Alvarez is the one on the other sideline. If Muschamp is in place, I think he should be there.

It's not common at all, not sure why the OP even asked it. Pretty much all new coordinators wait until after the bowl game to start. Very rare to see a brand new coach to the schools first game be a bowl game.

I always thought it might help with the evaluation process of players. It could give coaches a heads up of who is actually keen to buy in.
Just my opinion, but I think in 15 practices, you could get a pretty good feel for whose positions might be in jeopardy.

When we hired Sumlin in 2011, Tim DeRuyter (former DC/interim HC for Bowl game) allowed Sumlin to sit in on practices to see the players, and then Sumlin attended our bowl game to get game evaluation, but he didn't coach them. I have never heard of any new coach coaching his new team for the bowl game

Tony Franklin coached Auburn's bowl game in 2007 against Clemson. Best our offense looked that entire year, and unfortunately it was the best the offense would ever look with Franklin at the helm.

Yeah I remember being all excited after that bowl game... that was quite a build up for a tremendous fall in the next season.

If Franklin has come in at the beginning of the 2007 season with Cox as a senior, we would have won the SEC that year. Down year for SEC.
I like the OC/DC coming in before the bowl game. Gives them an idea of what talent is on the team. A familiarity with the old offense/defense so they have an idea of what is similar/different in his system (like verbage). And gives him a chance to get to know the players.
