This last weekend the wife, kids, and I took a long weekend and drove down to San Diego to see her brother. He has been looking for a job for about 3 years now with no luck. He's an artistic dude and can't seem to break into the graphic design field in any meaningful way. Anyways driving back to El Paso we passed dozens of trains. I was thinking to myself if you had no Job, No commitments why not just hop on and explore the US?

Has anyone just said my life isn't really going anywhere and maybe I need a change of pace/reset and just rode the rails across the US exploring with seemingly no sense of purpose? Seems like an interesting way to get a renewed sense of purpose and possibly a new perspective on life.

How do you pay for food?

Where do you sleep?

Maybe I am naive but I have a hard time believing it takes someone 3 years to find a job. There are other issues going on.

Personally, I wouldn't go about it that way.

I really thought you were going to suggest that he become a train conductor, which I think would be a really great idea.

My grandmother's brother did that for a while. Of course it was during the Great Depression.

Oh for sure the dude is a construction management major from ASU and was a PMP.

I've always wanted to do something like this, but without a large sum of money put aside, I think I'd be too anxious to do it.

Freight trains? Don't they kick your arse if they catch you on those?

Yep:

I hung out with this type a LOT in college as an English major. Most of them were lazy, flaky, and all have grand plans with no clue how to carry them out and the complete inability to follow through.

I've taken some two week motorcycle trips before. Great way to clear your head. The first one, I went alone and carried a tent and a sleeping bag. It was a mini-reset. I recommend them highly

He has no desire to work if he is degrees in CM and is not employed, fwiw.

Yeah everyone knows that, but he dislikes construction and wants to be a graphic designer.
