Be a truck driver and get paid to go from coast to coast. It's what I did a few years ago after getting cut off from financial aid. Had a blast driving from Brooklyn to Laredo in a weekend then turning north to Wisconsin by Thursday. When the company kept me rolling, driving cross country was a blast.

That sounds safe . Now wonder these truck drivers fall asleep at the wheel

Maybe I am naive but I have a hard time believing it takes someone 3 years to find a job. There are other issues going on.

I agree. WTF? Must want a hand out. I never went without a job more then a week in 40+ years. Just dam lazy fricks that want a hand out.

Heart goes out to him. Finding a job in a specialized field is no picnic. Has he thought about relocating and trying in a new market?

Seems like an interesting way to get a renewed sense of purpose and possibly a new perspective on life.

Are you familiar with photographer/train hopper Mike Brodie?

Has anyone just said my life isn't really going anywhere and maybe I need a change of pace/reset and just rode the rails across the US exploring with seemingly no sense of purpose? Seems like an interesting way to get a renewed sense of purpose and possibly a new perspective on life.

Absolutely. I plan to do something like this the normal way though, WHEN I RETIRE and can 'disappear' for a month without the kids needing me.

Yeah he moved to Denver for two years and moved back. He has a job doing designs for companies however per design it's only around $400 so with that he has to do a ton of volume to get anywhere.

this thread really isn't about his personal situation it's really about freight hopping.

This all started when he met this old homeless dude that used to haunt the Northgate area, dude goes by "Chief". Their relationship basically turned into my buddy buying the old man everything he needs and doing anything the old man wants.

Now this is indeed an odd tale.

We got as far as mapping rail routes in college, and had a pilot buddy who was going to help us.
