While I think John was a huge hypocrite, Plastic Ono Band is evidence that he was at least getting a little sick of Beatle fame and was more focused on his own psychological issues stemming from coming from a broken family and exacerbated by his constant drug use. He still showed tendencies of wanting to be in the limelight even towards the end of his life, but he was certainly different from his younger self. I am not really a big John fan (he's my third favorite Beatle), but he was definitely taken too early and I would have enjoyed seeing what he would have been like today.

frick Yoko Ono.

You gonna look fine
Be primed for dancing
You're gonna trip and glide
All on the trembling plane
Your diamond hands
Will be stacked with roses
And wind and cars
And people of the past

I'll call you thing
Just when the moon sings
And place your face in stone
Upon the hill of stars
And gripped in the arms
Of the changeless madman
We'll dance our lives away
In the Ballrooms of Mars

You talk about day
I'm talking 'bout night time
When the monsters call out
The names of men
Bob Dylan knows
And I bet Alan Freed did
There are things in night
That are better not to behold

You dance
With your lizard leather boots on
And pull the strings
That change the faces of men
You diamond browed hag
You're a gutter-gaunt gangster
John Lennon knows your name
And I've seen his

He was obviously excited about getting back into music and was planning a world tour in '81. It would have been interesting where it would go and if the rest of the Beatles had gotten back together either as a band or work with each other - really John and Paul as John worked with George and Ringo.

People gave Ono a lot of shite for following Lennon to band practices (a taboo in the music world known as "being a Yoko Ono"), but Ono only did that because Lennon demanded that she come out of fear she would leave him. He even made her go into the bathroom with him, afraid someone would snatch her away while she waited in the lobby. At the same time, he was openly unfaithful to her, just as he was to his first wife.
This prompted me to do a youtube search for "Yoko sucks". Wow, that was entertaining.

If Double Fantasy is any indication, we didn't miss out on any future great music. I find Lennon's solo work, aside from the Plastic Ono Band, to be pretty terrible, and he was travelling down the path towards boring adult contemporary.

It's sad he was murdered, no one deserves that.

Lennon had issues but I believe he had turned his life around after his break from music during 75-79.
