Nobody ever gets an offer until the deal is finalized. That doesn't mean negotiations weren't underway.

Half truths give you plausible deniability. If your agent does the talking, you haven't talked. If you just talk to an old friend/colleague from another school, you didn't have an interview and there was certainly no job offer.
