My feeling was that we "settled". I also remember the rejoicing Oklahoma fans and thinking awww shite.

Worded perfectly. I like Miles. Had no idea who he was when we hired him but I did get a lot of "thank you" commenrs from OSU fans while working in different parts of Oklahoma that year. But most OSU fans now regard him leavinf as a loss that I have spoken to.

And then Katrina hit, and his entire first season was an amazing triumph considering the obstacles he faced.
That first season (the two losses notwithstanding) was Les Miles' finest coaching job at LSU.

I thought it was a rushed hire due to the fact that Saban left so late in the process (Dec. 25th) and was solely based off of two games, his two upsets of OU
People are flat-out lying if they say they were happy with the hire at the time.

absolutely. although it may be a tie with 2011. The fact that LSU went undefeated, won an SEC championship, and played for the NC with Lee and Jefferson at QB is an amazing feat

I was disappointed and thought LSU could have done better. I knew we wouldn't be able to replace Saban with someone better. However, I've been very happy with Miles. He's had a great 10 year run, won a NC, 2 SECs and averaged 10 wins a season. It has been LSU's best 10-year run ever (even better than the 60s).
I don't know Miles, but he seems to be a great manager of people. It is obvious he instills trust in players and subordinates. His style is on the other end of the penduluum from Saban who is a super-intense, detail freak. Saban obviously has a better record and reputation, but he left us. I can't think of anyone else (with possible exception of Urban Meyer)who would have been more successful over the last 10 years than Miles.
Miles is self-deprecating and comfortable in his own skin. He's not one of those guys who has to be seen as the smartest guy in the room. I like that. He does things is own way and beats those guys (even Saban sometimes).
Anyway, I wish the best for Miles. I hope we have him for a few more years.

saban's recruits + an extra game in 2007 did break some of them. did we break them again last year?

Which goes to show you, pretty much any decent coach could come Into this program and be very successful. The program sells itself and changing coaches would not be the debacle that most of the chicken littles fear.

Two relative unknowns came into a struggling program, launched their careers and won. Both of them parlayed that into multi million $ contracts quickly.
Now who's "and another one " you dweeb?

Wasn't happy one bit, I can remember hearing Jimmy Ott on the radio breaking the news and remember thinking this guy just had his team slaughtered in the Alamo bowl by the Ohio State University and we are hiring him as Head Coach. I remember thinking that Bertman may know Baseball but he doesn't know crap about football. Never really liked the hire from the very beginning.
This. I remember how much he was made fun of in the Big XII. Many people thought that he was mentally handicapped because of the shite he would say. His teams at Okie State never challenged for the conference title and he blew huge leads in games versus Texas on several occasions. Many LSU fans didn't know who he was, and the fanbase as a whole was very underwhelmed by the hire.

Pretty much an unknown...much like Saban was when we hired him.
I see people say this all the time, which is a bit puzzling. I knew all about Nick Saban and was thrilled with the hire. I had friends who had really never heard of him, but people who really followed college football were very familiar with him.

Considering his record at Oklahoma State: 2001: 4-7 5th in South 2002: 8-5, won bowl, 3rd in South 2003: 9-4 lost bowl, 3rd in South 2004: 7-5 lost bowl, 5th in South Were they up in arms? Happy? What?
Didn't know who him by name. When I heard he was the Coach at OSU, I recalled that they were scrappy and had beaten some teams that should not have and had competed in, but not won, some games against Texas. That made me feel a little better because it was similar to what Saban had done at Michigan State. Overall, I thought LSU could have done better.
Today: Glad guys like me don't get to hire HC's. The two best prospective coaches that year, Spurrier and Meyer had already been taken. LSU had to make something out of nothing and at least find a guy who wouldn't take backwards steps. I certainly can't see how anyone can argue they didn't accomplish that.

Was underwhelmed, but he was an unknown so I was open. Saw some moments of excitement and some head scratching moments. Anyway, was still ok with the status of the program because LSU still could compete with any team in the conference. At this point, LSU is middle of the pack in the SEC.

Oklahoma State would not trade him back for Gundy
Miles was 2-2 versus Bob Stoops, and two of those losses came in years where Oklahoma played for a national title. Gundy is 1-9 with a much more talented OSU roster, while Oklahoma has not been as good.

in 07 with crowton? some but not all if i recall correctly. AL 3 of those years were record breakers offensively regardless.

correct. he was forced to get pelini. and it paid off. #3 defense in the country three years running.
