Is there anything more frustrating than purchasing a potential Christmas or birthday gift for someone and then discovering that the individual took it upon him/herself to buy the item shortly before the holiday?

My SO's birthday is in early December and of course Christmas is later this month, but she still suddenly decided to buy a CD for herself that I already ordered online as one of her gifts.

I asked her if she still had the receipt and then promptly requested that she return the CD.

Was I being a dick or does this bother other people too?

Just get her a gift card to a nice pizza or burger joint.

uhhh yes. Wtf would you make her do that for?

I woudl think a normal human would return YOUR cd that you bought her and get her something else, then after exchanging gifts at christmas tell her what happened and have a nice chuckle about it. Now, not only do you come across as a shithead, but she knows what she's about to get as a gift. Way to go.

I do this all the time. The season causes you to think about stuff you want.

Or, you could take this opportunity to realize how lucky you are and not buy a gift at all. Women don't expect you to have a laundry list of things you know they like.

"Baby, I bought that CD for Christmas, but you bought it before I could give it to you. Let's just sit at home now and give me BJs on the couch."

I ordered the CD about two weeks before she decided to buy it on a whim. She has explicitly told me some things she wants but I decided to surprise her with this as well.

Sometimes people specifically want what they ask for, so I doubt she's too bummed out in regards to knowing about the CD.

she might be bummed out by you forcing her to return something that she bought herself, only to get it back a few days later from you.

I own a few hundred of them. I can't stand listening to the radio while driving and I've never felt the need to own a smart phone/mp3 player/iPod.

You can have the physical copy of the CD while also being able to back up the files on your computer. Plus, some people like reading the liner notes or lyrics.

Possibly, but at least now she gets it for free. Plus, I'm sure I got it for a cheaper price.

There is your problem. Do what your woman tells you to do.

Or, she could keep the CD, which she obviously wanted bad enough to go purchase on her own, plus a new different gift from you.

Just listen to the song and type them out on your typewriter so you can carry them around. Real simple, dude.

Just get her a discman with bass boost. She's probably due for an upgrade.
