We did need a roster spot if we were going to sign a free agent. He also could have really not wanted to play here. We basically chose Miller, young, and Babbitt over Casspi.

Then cut him right before you send in a signed contract for a better SF. At that point, we owe him nothing.

His roster spot = Salmons' roster spot, so it absolutely was Casspi v. Salmons.

No, his roster spot was the roster spot of a $2.7 million exception. In hindsight it's easy to say "you shouldn't have signed Salmons(Stiemsa)", it's a lot harder to say you should have kept Casspi, left the exception money on the table and not tried to improve the SF spot anymore.

Salmons has looked better, certainly better than Miller. If we're judging with hindsight then the proper course would have been keep Casspi and choose Salmons over Miller.

Casspi was struggling in his career here for a while. He just found the right situation this year so far. He might be on the bench at the end of the year for all we know.

espn update:

The New Orleans Pelicans are in advanced discussions to sign former Dallas Mavericks point guard Gal Mekel, according to league sources.

Sources told ESPN.com on Thursday that the Pelicans have zeroed on Mekel in their search for backcourt depth after auditioning a number of guards this week, including NBA veteran Eric Maynor, Diante Garrett from the D-League's Iowa Energy and former Los Angeles Lakers player Darius Morris.

The procedural delay that scuttled Indiana's plan to sign Mekel last month is not expected to cause any issues if the Pelicans, as expected, complete a deal this week with the 26-year-old from Israel.
Indiana initially targeted Mekel after his strong preseason, which included a 19-point, nine-assist outburst against the Pacers on Oct. 18 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Mekel then made the Mavericks' opening night roster out of training camp -- beating out three others with NBA experience for Dallas' last spot -- but was subsequently let go when the Mavs had an unexpected opportunity to re-sign Barea at a minimum salary and bring back a key reserve from the Mavs' 2011 championship team. It takes two minutes of watching him play to see he passes better than anybody on our bench

Even if his talent level is as Dleaugue as the rest of the bench, he fills a huge hole because his 1 NBA skill looks like passing/creating.

I agree with this and we could use a little Gravy right now.

We had to trade him for the rec league hero baller, though.

I'd still take the rec league hero baller over Gravy. They're on different levels, as players, and in two different categories, as guards. Gravy is best suited for his current role as the third guard off the bench.

I'm not ready to ship out Tyreke, and I like the acquisition of Asik given the circumstances, but if these are my two options, I'm taking the first, granted it is in hindisght.

1. Vasquez, Robin Lopez, $7 mil in cap space (Tyreke + Asik - Gravy and RoLo, that's me assuming we don't trade for Asik with RoLo), 1st round pick

2. Tyreke, Asik, Withey.

The same role they had envisioned for Tyreke....

No they had the "Manu Ginobili/James Harden in OKC" role envisioned for Tyreke(talking about how bad idea this was is for another thread). If you want to be technical, you can call that the third guard off the bench, because it isn't a starter, but that role is completely different than what Gravy does. They envisioned him coming off the bench and feasting on other teams subs but also taking the place of whatever random arse SF we started, once we got down to the final 5-6 minutes of the game. Gravy would never be viewed as that. The original plan may have never been for him to start but he certainly was brought in to be apart of the finishing group. Your typical third guard(Gravy) is not utilized that way.
