Dog discussion: blue lacy
Posted by b-rab2 on 12/4/14 at 7:36 am00
My fiancé wants a blue lacy after we get married. Does anyone have one? I know nothing about them and just recently heard about them. Any insite is helpful. TIA

Is she ready to bring the dog out for walks and runs daily? If not, get something a bit lazier.

My old man had one.
The best general purpose dog breed there is IMO. I'll try to be more descriptive later on.
Eta: not sure if she's still involved, but Marlo Riley used to be head of the lacy game dog registry in Texas. She was very enthusiastic about it and I'm sure she would love to help you decide if the breed is a good fit if she's still doing it.

I've owned a Lacy and have several friends that know this breed like the back of their hand. They breed dogs primarily for blood tracking deer
Lacy's are full of energy and need lots of exercise. Plenty of room to run. A small backyard or confined in the house will only make the dog go stir crazy.
The Lacy was originally bred as a herding dog and do well around livestock. Very smart and obedient, and reminds me of a Vizsla when it comes to temperament.

I'm pretty sure ours could understand English like a person. I have plenty of cool stories about her.
She hearded cows, treed squirrels, tracked dear, barked at the meter man, rode on the roof of the truck, killed raccoons, etc.
A very awesome dog.

Have a close friend with a female that's about 5 or 6 now. She's extremely hard headed but incredibly obedient and smart. She's the family pet and a wounded deer dog. She's never lost a deer from what I know.
VERY high energy and protective of the family (especially the kids).

I have a female, they are great dogs, but mine is not the super active dog everyone makes them out to be. Yeah she is very athletic and super fast but would just as soon lay around. She is very smart and surprisingly protective. She loves to ride, I had her in the truck one day and a guy walks up to the truck to look at her and she came unglued. No doubt if he had stuck his hand in that truck she would have bit him.
I went through the Blue Lacy forum to get her from a breeder 2 hrs west of Dallas. There is a breeder in Mississippi that produces lots of blood dogs.
Mine is pregnant by a BMC, really interested to see how these puppies turn out. If any one wants one let me know I will have plenty.

Let me know when they pop out.
Did you purposefully breed her with the BMC or was it just one of those things?

I wanted them to see what kind of dog they will make. Should be some good dogs. The BMC came straight from Curtis Ladner out of his treeing stock side. He's treeing squirrels and will timber them but need to be hunted more.

Did some research after reading this thread. What might be a price on a puppy? Anybody have a clue. I usually know dog breed prices but I've never actually heard of a blue lacy, kinda interested in a pair. My beagles are getting older and past their hunting prime, not sure if I want more beagles or another kind of hunting dog.

She was just bred 2 weeks ago. I will post on here when they are born. I want to keep a couple but she usually has big litters.

I know some guys that have made this cross for Hog dogs. Supposed to be a pretty good cross. Let us know when the puppies get here. Might be worth my drive to Farmerville to take a look!
