I finally found some time, and will be taking the conceal carry class in 2 weeks.

What are the best options for a compact or sub compact handgun, and what caliber? I was thinking 9mm since I already have a full size M&P 9mm, but open to suggestions.

Price range: $550 before tax.

Revolvers aren't my first choice, but not out of the question.

love my S&W hammerless .38 revolver. Fits in my front pocket, 5 rounds, loud, and low recoil (for its size). If you can't hit them or scare them away with 5 shots, you shouldn't have a gun IMO.

I second this, perfect size. Should be able to get it at $400 with a holster.

Its a little out of my price range. Awesome looking gun, and I've heard nothing but good things about it, once i graduate and start making a decent salary, that will probably be my conceal carry gun.

Correct answer for the OP. The controls and feel will be similar to his full sized pistol.

Since you already have a full size M&P, I'd suggest considering (in no particular order):
Springfield XDS
S&W Shield
Beretta Nano
Ruger LC9
Kahr CW9/CM9
Kimber Solo
Sig 290
Sig 938 (if you're comfortable w/ SAO platform).

It depends on your carry method. IWB you will probably be most comfortable with a single stack 9mm. I'd suggest the Shield like most others.

Tiger made a pretty good list. I would check out the ones he suggested and see what feels best. All are quality guns.

I know that conceal carry pistols aren't supposed to be the most comfortable to shoot, but to get you out of a jam, but for some reason it didn't feel that comfortable in my hands, I guess because its single stack, idk. What about a sub/compact double stack 9mm, or is that too bulky to carry inside the waistband?

Even though I love my M&P, I think part of me would rather something different, other than another M&P, right now.

Palmetto State Armory has a sale on the springfield XD9 sub compact for $379.

Was also considering the Walther CCP, goes for around $450.
