Apple idea to protect phones in drops by turning it in mid air...

Depending on the rate of spin, angular velocity, time to impact and other factors, the vibration motor may be powered at higher rotational speeds than normal, effectively controlling momentum and ultimately landing angle.

Very possible. The phone has all the sensors and moving parts to do it. I question how it determines "time to impact". There's no way the phone knows if I drop it from my ear, my pants pocket, or my lap.
Also, not sure how well it would work either. Just like Honda/Acura's Active Noise Control. Great in theory but only mediocre in practice.

that is a pretty awesome idea. Will be interesting to see if they can get it to work well. I'm imagining people trying to put their phones in their pockets and it spinning out of their hands onto the ground.

The vibrator on my iPhone being powerful enough to flip the phone mid fall seems absurd. I'll take it if it works, but I'd put more stock in Gorilla Glass 4.

I think they're pretty frustrated with GT Advanced or whatever the name of that sapphire company is. The 6's and 6+'s are supposed to have all sapphire screens which should be MUCH more scratch and crack resistance. They knew they needed it running the glass over the circular contoured edge.
They didn't deliver and Apple had to go with a backup which creates a small but non insignificant issue with quality control.
I'm guessing at the end of the day that Apple doesn't want to compromise design but also allow you to never have to use a bumper or screen protector.

I've read that sapphire isn't more crack/shatter resistant, just more scratch resistant. After seeing Gorilla Glass 4's claims of 80% impact survival rate, twice as good as GG3, I'm kind of glad sapphire didn't work out. It might have ended up empty marketing that didn't actually solve the problem we all want solved. Maybe they can put a sapphire coating on GG4 and get the best of both worlds.

It wouldn't have been 100% sapphire. It would have been a sapphire laminate that potentially would have given us both worlds.

yea this sounds like the old story of nasa creating a pen to work in space and the Russians using a pencil.

Devices that automatically decrease the likelihood of damage, with or without a case, is a good thing. It would cost essentially zero dollars in extra material to build, and the only cost is programming time (relatively little compared to the whole OS). This will be a standard safety feature in a few years, and will cost next to nothing to implement. Much like pens in space.
