First off, let me say that I absolutely believe Minimum wage laws harm the very people they are designed to help, BUT there are many people who believe that your typical minimum wage worker is an unskilled worker, teenager, etc. the reality is that the person you see working retail, at fast good joints, etc was once middle class white collar. I personally know a few folks who had corporate jobs, lost those jobs and, because of their age, cannot find anything. They are forced to settle for Minimum wage service jobs.

I think most MW workers have similar stories

Most is probably bit of a stretch, i am sure it isn't uncommon though.

FIFY

This scenario about aging folks losing jobs is common but in my experience is due mostly to them being overpaid for the skills and upside they offer. I have no sympathy for them.

Thankfully this is still a mostly free job market in this country. You get paid what you're worth. Period.

I don't know what grease burger joints you go to but I doubt I've rarely if ever seen an ex white collar middle aged worker flipping burgers or handing me my fries at the window. They're either teenagers or people that have never held a white collar job.

Age discrimination is very real, always has been. The best protection you have is to stay current, look for opportunities to help your boss, etc. In other words, act like you have a career to look forward to rather than a career behind you.

The last few fast food joints I went to- Pizza Hut, Popeyes, and Canes- did not have a single middle age white collar former employee working for them

Price controls don't work for goods and services, why would they work for labor?

Why do you want more people to be unemployed?

I'm 26 and this scares the living crap out of me. I can't imagine getting fired/laid off in my 50's...

Never stop learning, and study trends to know what skills will be in demand for the future. You can't expect to land a job and keep it for 40 years, as quickly as technology is changing the way the world works.

When I was a chain store manager, we had 25 employees in the first store I managed. When the minimum wage went up a previous time, my district manager/boss and the company told me to cut the number of employees from 25 to 22, when MW goes up. We follow an 8% of sales for payroll. If I don't cut 3 jobs, we lose money and eventually close, so cut. That's what MW did for me.

Companies that start employees at or right above minimum wage also vastly underpay associates who move up in their ranks.

How does one "vastly underpay" someone without facing the consequences of it? Labor is highly volatile, and will go towards the firms that pay them the amount they are worth.

I doubt the marginal value of a manager at Wal-Mart is worth very much.

Raising the minimum wage to keep pace with inflation doesn't cause any long term increase in unemployment. (though pegging it to inflation annually would be better than doing it in massive chunks every decade or so as we currently do)

Why do you want the lowest wage earners to get their real wages cut by inflation on a continuous basis? You can't be that greedy, can you?

I change jobs every few years, just started a new one. Starting over don't bother me.

Well, you "think" incorrectly unless your definition of "most" is different than Webster's.

Why do you think someone should have to pay more for a resource than it's worth?

Do you do that in your daily life? Intentionally pay more for all the things you want than what you otherwise could pay?

Buying labor is no different than buying bread other than in the minds of pathetic people who can't comprehend economics.

I most certainly am, and I am more concerned about monetary inflation caused by the same government that enacts minimum wage.
