Build

How did I do? Is there anything the gaming board PC experts think I should change before this ships? I would appreciate your input.

By the way, thanks to ILikeLSUToo for his extensive guide.

I just built one at a similar budget with the help of ILoveLSUToo and others. Here's my 2 cents:

If this is just for gaming, i7 is probably overkill in this build.

I got 2133 MHz memory for close to the same price, think it was in the 80s. Not sure if 1600 is necessarily an issue, tho.

I got the same SSD, love it.

Looks pricy for an 80+ bronze PSU. I got my 80+ gold for $60, same wattage.

Good config, high-end card and i7 in a $1000 build is fantastic. With all the GPU price drops, I probably need to update my guide at some point.

There are two things that I highly suggest you consider:

First, the RAM. DDR3-1600 CL11 (cas latency) is bottom of the barrel. You can get faster RAM (and lower latency) for cheaper. If the merchant of choice doesn't matter, you're better off getting this GSkill kit from Newegg for $56.99: LINK

If it has to be from Amazon, this ADATA kit is $64.99 (and marginally slower than the g.skill above): LINK

Secondly, you really should get an aftermarket cooler. Hyper 212 EVO, H80, just something better than stock. You won't want to overclock on stock cooling, and you don't want a K-series CPU unless you're planning to overclock eventually.

Other than that, it looks fine (I could find anything to nitpick about but it wouldn't significantly affect performance).

Didn't notice any deals on 2133MHz RAM but I may have missed it. The two options I offered are cheaper than his current choice and not too far off in performance from the 2133 CL10 kit.

Don't put too much stock in Bronze, Silver, Gold, etc. As long as the 12v rail(s) provide enough amperage and the PSU is made by a reputable manufacturer, the only difference in ratings are a couple of dollars saved annually on your electric bill.

Right now, $5 more could get him the Rosewill capstone, $20 less could get him the Hive. Any of the 3 PSUs would be fine. Prices change all the time; it's beneficial and annoying at the same time.

Hey that's what I have! Comfortably at 9-11-11-28 and OC'ed to 2133MHz.

Also, $329 for a 290X? Can't you get a 970 for 329-339 and have significantly more performance at half the TDP?

Hope you didn't pay 300$+ for that graphics card. Earlier New egg has the exact card for $230

Edit $230 for 290, not 290x

I wouldn't have spent more than $250 on that card.

$279 is the cheapest I see on NewEgg, with rebate. Unless they sold one cheaper earlier.

Yeah I meant for OP, he bought new, cheapest I've seen is 279.99.

But NewEgg is crushing everyone right now selling the PowerColor 290 with rebate for 199.99. No one else is even close to that price.

Haven't seen a new 290X that cheap. The 970 is worth considering. It performs about as well (better in some games, a little worse in others), but outputs less heat, uses less power, and may overclock a little better/more safely.

970 is pretty much the high-end value king right now.

However, you'd need a different motherboard if you were to SLI in the future. That board does not support SLI.

For almost the same price? Yeah, easily the 970. 290X can't compare.

AMD is due for the 390 and 390X in what, February? I think. Early 2015, which is coming pretty damn soon.

ETA: I wish I would have known NewEgg was going to sell that R9 290 for $199 after rebate, I would have gotten that dammit and sold my 270X. frick me. Obviously sold out.

Can y'all link me a decent brand at a good price for the GTX 970? I'm going to request cancellation for the R9-290x, but I don't want to have to cancel another order if I order one that's not reliable. Thanks for the help!

By the way, I don't plan to ever use a 2nd video card. I'll probably just build another system in a few more years.

I already requested cancellation for the RAM and bought the GSkill off of NewEgg.

Finding a 970 in stock right now is tough.

ASUS GeForce GTX 970 Strix OC 1253MHZ 4GB

Use 15% off code, GIVETHANKS, $334.99.

The 290x is still superior to the 970.

And the 970s are in stock just about everywhere. I got one off of amazon on wednesday. It's a birthday present so I plan on selling it since my 780 runs just as well.

Nah man the cheaper ones under the 340 range are out of stock all over, most were on sale today and are gone.

And I'd much rather have a 970 than a 290X.

This one look good?

LINK

I'd really like to get it by Monday or Tuesday, and I have Amazon Prime and an Amazon Rewards card. The site you linked was Canadian, and it looked like it might ship late next week even with their fastest shipping options.

Oh yeah if you're willing to go up to that price that one is great.

Doesn't change the fact that you can get multiple off of amazon for (under $370 too), including the one that I'm getting.

Okay? The 290x is still a superior card, that is still $35 cheaper (Brand new, used has even more disparity) and are regularly in stock.

That's the same card that I purchased. Mine should be in tomorrow, but then straight back to amazon it goes
