In the market for home entertainment system. Already have receiver.

Anyone have recommendations on speakers? No idea what to get. Could be In-ceiling or mounted.

Looking for something middle of the road.

Most people would say in-ceiling are not any good. I think they look better if you need the rear fill in an open room.

I'm partial to Polk. Find your price range and style. I honestly think my next house will just have a sound bar in the living room. I'll save the nicer stuff for the media room.

This is going to be different, but if I were starting over with my home system, I'd seriously consider a pair of Mackie HR824 powered monitors.

Mackie at Guitar Center

Edit: fyi, those are sold individually (price per each)

Powered, so you never have to worry about does your receiver have "enough power", and designed to be accurate.

I'd even consider finding some used, or even older versions of these.

If you decide you need more bass, check out SVS.

I've got some kickass JM Lab Electra's if you wanta impress somebody. (maybe)

To avoid ambiguity, what sort of budget are you talking about? What components do you already own...receiver? Old system? Anything?
How big of a room?
How many discrete sources? Examples would be cable box, ChromeCast, Roku, blu Ray player, CD player, record player, etc

You're limiting it to in-ceiling or wall mounted? Bookshelf and floor-standing are out?

Do you ever listen to music? Do you want (or even know the difference between) a 2.0/1, 5.1/2, 7.1/2 system?

Very unusual way of doing it, and you'll limit a lot of the convenience of a system with a receiver- where is your volume control and input switching coming from, and how is it controlled? How are you splitting your source into surround sound (if running more than stereo?) what's your center?

And if you are looking at powered monitors anyway, check out the KRK Rockit 6s and 8s if you haven't. For my money, they're probably my favorite of the that-ish price range powered monitors that are widely available.

Just bought a Klipsch R-20B soundbar with 10" sub on Crutchfield last night for $600. Normal price everywhere for them is $800, and the lower price equalled the price on the lesser R-10B, so I took the plunge
