Exactly. I've read the Thrawn trilogy and several others and enjoyed them, but they're not canon and never have been.

I have to admit, I am very curious about why we have tie fighters and stormtroopers still as part of the big bad.
It's been 30 years. You'd think they would have run down all members of the empire. Further, you'd think no one as evil as the dark side would show up wearing the same unis that mark them as the evil empire.
The Sith were about subtle moves not overt ones.

The way the guard is set just doesn't make any sense and it appears somewhat forced

Makes sense to me actually. The galaxy is really fricking huge, as was the empire. The rebellion was pretty small. Even if the rebellion had half of the galaxy on its side after Ep. 6 (which is a pretty ambitious number) that would still mean half the galaxy is loyal to the empire. War would go on a long time.
