Would you recommend the 10 over the 220?

Not a phone app. I find a phone way too bulky to run with.

I used to run with nothing but a sansa clip b/c of that issue when I ran 20+ miles a week. Over time I got fat and got used to an arm band and my work phone(iphone4s) with spotify and map my run. Works for my piddling around the lakes and br for 2-4 mile runs.

Varsity Baton Rouge is putting garmin 10's on sale for $99 this Saturday. You can usually find them online for that or even cheaper, but this could save you shipping, support a local business and you can try it on before hand. Not to mention, if you don't like it or need any warranty help, they can assist.

Just stopped by few weeks ago for a new Stick and some more Bodyglide for my taint and nips.

At that price point, just starting out, yes.

You could likely sell it in a year for $75 if you wanted to upgrade.

Own Garmin 210, 405, and 410 for me and the wife. We love them all. I haven't owned anything else so can't give a comparison but uploading of run data using the ant+ is easy.

They've gotten rid of the ant+ with the newer watches. But you're right. I've had no problem with uploads and garmin connect

Why do you kids need GPS? Gotta post your runs on the Internets Book? Just get out there and run. I don't even wear a watch anymore. I know I ran close to 8 miles last night and I know about what my pace was.

Well shite. Apparently I was counting my chickens before they hatched.

I had an application to run in the Boston Marathon out and just got the email saying I didn't get a bib.

Nobody needs a GPS watch to run, but it is a HUGE benefit in terms of training. There is a difference between exercising and training without question.

It helps you prevent over/under training, when paired with a HRM you can track periods of fatigue and stress and you how react to recovery. In terms of racing it help you implement our race strategy and not let adrenaline bring you out too fast and can also be a tool in gauging distance when races don't have mile markers every mile.

Are there cons, of course. Some people can become slaves to the numbers, but like you I want the data. I've got a power meter on my bike and ride and run with a HRM.

In training, I want to know what my 100, 200, 500 and 1000 yard splits are when I am pushing it and when I am swimming at my recovery pace. I want to be able
know after a long ride what my HR was when I was in the midst of a 20 minute race effort interval. Over time, if training is effective, the same effort should become easier (lower HR) in similar conditions. When I go on my long run, I want to put some 20 minute race pace intervals in there at different times and I want to see how my body reacts to each interval (via HR).

When I pop out of the water on race day I want to know what my swim time was, then see the exact effort I am putting into the pedals as I ride, then know my pace and how my body is reacting to that pace to know how I am really doing.

I was getting some mileage estimations for my morning runs while were at WDW and not sure if you have ever noticed or not, but the satellite images taken near Epcot that are used on mapmyrun are all taken the day of the marathon (or one of the other day races that finish along that route.

Thats the aid station (mile 24 I believe) just before you get to the Boardwalk Resort

Cones lining the course just before the Epcot fountain (mile 25.7 ish)

Garmin has an online free site called garmin connect that will track and keep all your workouts. Very easy to use and nice to see weekly mileage totals, etc.

Recently upgraded from the forerunner 405 to the 220. 220 is nice because can sync to garmin connect app via Bluetooth. The 220 does not have swipe screen technology but buttons are very easy to use.

A very good site that reviews running/swimming gps devices is dc rainmaker.com

Good luck.

I own a Suunto Ambit and really like it. I've heard the Garmin software for the computer may be better than the Suunto software but I'm not sure.

I like it, but I actually prefer Strava to keep a a log

Garmin Connect has alot more flexibility to be able to breakdown a run or race, but that sort of info is invaluable to someone to is critiquing their training sessions and races.

I did a Half Ironman a couple weeks ago and without garmin, I could never go back and look at data like this

I have the Tom Tom Multisport watch. I like it, caught it at a really great price on Amazon. I needed a new Bike Computer, and longer runs drained the battery on my phone. I've been very pleased with it, had it since July.

Edit: FWIW, Suunto and Garmin make excellent devices. I just didn't want to spend the money on an Ambit. You really can't go wrong.

I have a Garmin 210 ... love it. HRM capabilities as well as intervals. Just can't swim with it.
