Will the NFL step in and change the playoff format for future seasons?

I know people were talking about possible changes after the 7-9 Seahawks made it, but a 6 win team hosting an 11+ win team with another staying home might legitimately call for change.

IMO, there should be a rule that only winning your division AND finishing .500 or better gurantees a playoff spot. A 6-7 win division winner doesn't deserve the playoffs unless there is literally nobody better.

No.

The NFL Playoff format is the most fair post season format in sports. No matter how shitty the division is, the division winner is still the best team out of 4 teams in a 16 team conference and that deserves a playoff spot and home game no matter the record.

The problem is that since realignment there are simply not enough division games on the schedule. Theoretically, since you only play 6 division games now, you can lose every one and finish 10-6. Before at best 8-8. Opposite is also true, can win them all and finish 6-10 overall. This lack of intra divisional games is the issue. Unfortunately, playing 9 divisional games creates Home Away inequity. And I doubt anyone is interested in going to 12.

So without further expansion this will continue to be an issue. And God forbid a 6-10 team wins the super bowl. Because that will show how ridiculous the whole thing is.

It's funny how last year, Saints fans were pissed that they didn't get a home game despite having a better record than some teams hosting a playoff game.

But now they are completely fine with the idea of going 6-10 and getting a home game.

It is what is and despite it having this crucial flaw, I still consider it the best playoff format in pro sports but it's not completely perfect.

You mean a 6-10 team playing and winning four football games and earning all the wins fair and square?

That's what I love about NFL Playoffs, anyone can get hot, go on a roll and win it all.

Sorry to burst your bubble but I'm a saints fan and have no issue with it. I didn't complain when it happened with Seattle as well.

Saints fans were pissed that we blew the Carolina game. I personally don't know of anyone who bitched about play @ Philly.

This feels like a made up argument.

No. They aren't going to make a change unless there is expansion of the league. All divisons have down periods, for the past 3 seasons or so the NFC South was the hardest division in football, but it is down now it will rise again if the Saints get some O-line help and the Falcons hire Saban (not going to happen, but I would love to watch CSP's offense vs CNS defense).

I like giving division winners a playoff spot but I could see getting rid of giving them a home game

Had this same thread in 2010 when Seattle hosted the Saints. If they didn't change it then, they won't change it now.

Say what? You'd be hard-pressed to find homers outside of the NFC South say that it was a better division than the AFC West or NFC West in 2013. 2012? Atlanta was the only team in the division with a winning record. The NFC North, AFC North, and NFC were all better. In 2011, it was a solid division, but not better than the AFC North or NFC North.

Just like in 2010. It's stupid but it's the rule. If you win your division you get a home playoff game, simple as that.

It's just my opinion, but I think the fact that a 7-9 or 6-10 division "winner" has no part of being in the playoffs over a team that clearly outperforms them from another division.

The rules are the rules, though.
