Random OT request

Ok, the power of the OT is always pretty strong. Does anyone on here own a computer store in the Ascension Parish/ BR area? A colleague of mine said he has a friend (with limited means due to husband's passing) who is working on Christmas gifts for her kids. One apparently wants a computer and wants to build it himself (13 y/o). They are looking for a place to help accomplish. Anyone out there own or have a connection to a local computer shop?

Also... no pictures of said mom. I am sure if you help the lady out you can meet her in person and take the pictures yourself.

I'd piecemeal it. Go to Fry's.com, I've built several computers from there but only b/c I needed better graphics than what were onboard.

Good luck

Not sure about Ascension but I send people (who aren't very tech savy) to Tim's on Sherwood Forest. His prices are a little high but come with 3 years of service.

Also, try the tech board. You might have someone in the area willing to guide him through the purchasing and setup. Would be the cheapest option but he'd be on his own after it's together.

I've done this route 3 times... But I also paired the hardware with stuff from Tigerdirect.com

It's a lot of fun and rewarding when you get it powered up for the first time.

FWIW, you can buy working 17" monitors (the old non-LCD variety) at America's Thrift (near Cortana) for $5.00 or so. They're as big and clunky as ever, but I use them on various servers in lieu of having to connect via Remote Desktop. Also, they have a lot of peripheral devices (mice, keyboards) on the cheap.

Nice ideas. Thank y'all so much. If any of you know anyone personally that work at these shops to help the kid out just let me know. I really enjoy the OT during Christmas.

Computer Heaven is legit and will help you figure out everything if you aren't confident going the newegg or tigerdirect route

ILIkeLSUtoo on the tech board is the man you seek. He can hook you up with a better custom build for cheaper than a local store.

You may also try your luck on the gaming board. While most of those guys post about building hard-core gaming computers, I'm sure someone on there could help you out.

Post the request in the pinned thread on the gaming board. There are some people on there than can help you out, but it's good to have a budget. ILikeLSUToo just helped me out with my new build.
