If anybody disagrees, you will die from Ebola.

Christmas is the central idea, the setting, and a reoccurring symbol within the film. Unlike DH, there is no way that you can claim HA is not a Christmas film. End of story...

It's not a Christmas movie. They could have been flying to Colorado for Mardi Gras skiing.

It was released November 16th, so I guess that is close enough to the holidays to qualify as a Christmas movie.

A movie with "White Christmas" is a Christmas movie...

THIS IS CHRISTMAS!

Definitely a Christmas movie, not sure how you can argue with that.

Nope! You, sir, are wrong.

1. The family clearly states that they are together for CHRISTMAS.

2. It happens on Christmas Eve and Christmas day.

3. Kevin has a somewhat Scrooge moment when he finds out what life would be like if he lost everybody.

4. Kevin decorates for Christmas, plays Christmas music, and uses Christmas ornaments to defend his home. EVERYBODY else on the street decorates for Christmas and leave town to be with their families on Christmas day.

5. The Wet Bandits look forward to Christmas because of all the gifts and the fact that everybody will be out of town.

6. JOHN CANDY, God bless his soul, speaks about the spirit of Christmas.

7. Kevin hides in the manger in front of the church.

8. The neighbor goes to church on Christmas Eve to hear his granddaughter sing at midnight mass because he cannot see them at any other time.

9. Kevin seeks out Santa for advice.

I could go on...

There's not even an argument. Christmas is mentioned over and over again in the movie. The TV stations always play it around Christmas time too.

This is a lot of what makes it a Christmas movie. The central theme of the movie is about not taking family for granted and how the main point of the holidays is to be with family. Kevin's whole journey and development is coming to realize this as the rest of the family and mom in particular sacrifice their swank vacation in order to reunite the family just in time for Christmas.

Die Hard on the other hand is about killing terrorists, saving hostages, and stopping a bank heist. The point of the movie is centered around action and showing how bad arse John McClane is.

I keep having to look at the OP and make sure we're talking about the first Home Alone and not some sequel titled Home Alone: Lost Yet Again that went straight to DVD. I feel silly even confirming that the original is in fact a Christmas movie.

midnight mass

I'm pretty sure that was the 6 or 7PM service bc the bad guys were going to hit Kevin's house around 9.

See the one argument against in this thread, the one argument against in the DH thread, and the arguments against on the interwebz.

Some people have issues. I am here to clear up those issues.
