there are enough people who can not bench or struggle with 135lbs that having them just workout on machines is pointless. Everyone has to start somewhere to get to a certain point....

You're right. They should start on machines then progress to free weights.

if you want to gain any real world strength always lift free weights, never machines.

Why not start with the bar and add 5 lbs each session?

What the frick is real world strength?
Every professional bodybuilder uses machines. You utilize everything the gym to your best benefit.

Did you do that? I never did I think you learn in basic bodybuilding 101 if you wanna get stronger in a specific lift then work on that lift with lighter weight progressing weekly. Machines may work if that person has some sort of setback that hinders them to do bench and causes pain in general.

its your ability to lift things in your everyday lives. bodybuilders use machines in order to sculpt their bodies, not to be able to lift more

Just because you lift weights doesn't mean you are a body builder.

Professional bodybuilders use everything but they use machines to isolate certain muscle groups and your less likely to get injured with a machine since your movement is limited compared to free weights. I also assume that real world strength would be more benefited by free weights since your working more muscles and that can carry over to everyday work in general in someway.

I agree but if you google body building it states "the activity of doing exercises (such as lifting weights) to make the muscles of your body larger and stronger" so I assume anyone who lifts weights in the gym for the purpose of getting bigger is bodybuilding?

Of course free weights would help you I guess in what my idea of what he is calling "real world strength". But to believe that machines have no effect on that is idiotic. The average guy in the gym will still get plenty of "real world strength" from squatting at the smith machine instead of at the squat rack (and that can be said for many things).

squating on the smith machine is a complete waste of time. i don't care how much of a beginner you are. squatting in the squat rack with just a bar would make you better off tbh

You just outed yourself. Smith machines are awful and you don't know what you're talking about

Not really.
The average person doesn't squat 400+ pounds. I know everyone on the OT does though.
Smith squats aren't 100% like barbell squats, but to believe that smith or any machine can't help increase your strength is ridiculous.

He's actually pretty nice. Guy is a monster in the gym. But yeah, the handicap tags always make me wonder why he has them. You never know what he may have though.

I assume not because you do realize majority of the Urec is college student's meaning none of them care about racking their weights as to just looking good or some stupid reason young kids workout for.

What?

Almost every single time people rack their weights. It's really 90+% of the time. So it is actually noticeable when someone doesn't. It usually is one of these big guys who feel entitled in the gym because they are juicing up, frick them.

I feel like this thread could have just as easily had 16 downvotes. The momentum got going for the upvotes though. Good for you.
