The Greek system is more present in some schools than others. Ole Miss is Greek to an insane degree iirc while many other schools in the south aren't nearly as Greek, at least on the fraternity side of things.

Ive talked to many UVA grads and currents students.. The fraternities needed to be shut down, not just this one. A few of them were completely out of control

This is more in line with my recollection of my time there.

I agree with your measured approach to the issue.

I agree that there's no need to overreact.

Not surprising as most frats tend to be full of homosexuals who get off on sodomizing other men.

Because it isn't about one rape or one fraternity. This has been a wide spread problem at this university. Another poster shared a link confirming as much.

If you had read the RS article (which I recommend), you would know that.

In the end, the fraternity system should and will be abolished at more prestigious universities.

OK, then why don't they shut down UVA or at least fire the University president?

Maybe because they really don't care that much and just want to look like they are doing something???

Though, I couldn't really care less about fraternities getting shut down.

Just read the RS article.

Wow.

I hope my children stay from from the social frats/sororities in college. I never liked them. There are tons of other organizations on campus that I feel are better representations of the university.

Sounds like you're there right now but in my day Phi Psi's dirty rush game was strong. Pretty much had their class set when school started.

As an alum I'm fine with the response - something needed to be done and a temporary shut down while a plan is made works for me.

Just had a long conversation with my HS Soph daughter Saturday about sororities and the Greek system in general. To be clear, you can be sexually assaulted by anyone in college and I'm wary of any study which purports that fraternity boys are much more likely to sexually assault women than other demographics.

But the combination of an expected Bacchanal experience of college for 4+ years, 18-23 year old male libidos and immature pre-frontal cortexes added to copious amounts of alcohol and an unending supply of largely naive young women isn't a good formula.

I was in a fraternity. I enjoyed my time there, and there were a lot of benefits. But there was also a darker side to it, and it seems like the darker side is more prominent now. I honestly would be very wary of a child of mine pledging. I wouldn't forbid it, but I'd make sure they went into it with eyes open, and I'd monitor the situation closely.

You got a college for a next door neighbor? That's about the only way I see being able to monitor what kids do these days.

Good luck JR, at least you'll be trying.

You should start breaking her in to the roofie-detecting nail polish. I think it's brilliant.

Yeah. I saw that when it broke on the news. It's an ingenious idea. Kudos to the inventors.

Greek life, or at least getting blackout on a regular basis undoubtedly puts you at higher risk.

Jim,

I think yes, and no. In my fathers time fraternities were more like the Yale Club - or the Harvard Club. Of course, they also had rather savage initiation rites. That was true in the early 60s, and it was even true in the 1860s.

But he went to school before women entered college in force - before Animal House. Greek life changed forever in that period; the drinking became more prominent, the anti-establishment hell raising took over, and greek life became an eyesore (at least in the public eye).

Relentless pressure from nationals, from schools, from the media - and from parents have had an effect. Hazing is being toned down, and the drunken exploits are being curtailed. Here at UVa we're growing less and less comfortable hosting open parties. We don't want to run the risk of having a first year get themselves into serious trouble. Why throw a party for people you don't know if it means risking your charter? Why endanger your future for someone elses short lived fun?

We may be louder and cruder than the men who came of age in the sixties, but we're pretty buttoned up compared to the men who graduated in the eighties.

ShreveportSteamer.

The shutdown is all optics. They didn't want reporters filming parties. Nor did they want to risk an incident in the immediate aftermath of the article. Finally, it provides the illusion that they're doing something.

All in all, the shutdown is a good thing. It protects the administration, but it also protects us as well.

If Erdley did us one favor, she chose to pick a fight with everyone here on grounds.
