Should NBA promote team loyalty in the next CBA?

Saw some comments on this after Kobe, Dirk, and Cuban discussed "hometown discounts" for veteran players who have stayed loyal to their respective teams. Obviously Kobe was against taking less money, while Dirk and Cuban think it's the way to go.

Instead of these veteran players taking a "hometown discount," what if the next CBA included a loyalty clause? After you play X amount of years with a particular team, Y% of your contract doesn't affect the cap.

Star players would still get paid the big bucks, but the cap hit would be similar to taking a "hometown discount."

Good idea or bad idea?

I don't like it, personally. If you want to give a massive contract, deal with the repercussions of it. If your guy won't take a hometown discount and he isn't worth the major contract, let him go.

If a rule circumventing Max Salary happens then either the players got some incriminating pictures of the owners, or they gave up something else of value, like no max salary for 1 contract and a hard cap of $20 million for the rest of the players.

Why would the NBA want to keep great players in small markets when they can have AD, Chris Paul, and Kevin Durant playing in Los Angeles or New York?

They already give the home town team a solid boost with Bird Rights and higher years/$$. The repeater tax is a concern for teams, but you can be good and not pay the tax.

The one thing they should think about is the negative incentive to sign an extension with your current team. No star will ever re-sign before hitting UFA because of the current CBA rules. They did it to stop the Melo type trade and extend situations, but it has other consequences.

I don't know. The Lakers were nowhere near competitive last year and didn't have much of a future going forward when they offered Kobe the $$. Dirk feels like they can win a title this year. Kobe had to know they weren't. Why take less to be on a shitty team?
