Are all brands created equal? If not, what makes certain brands better than other? Which are the top brands to look at?

I have a Samsung Evo in my laptop, but looking to buy one for my wife's new laptop. I see the 256GB Evo will be $109 at Newegg for black friday. Has anyone seen a better deal?

Lastly, what is the best way to get the SDD installed. I am not computer savvy enough to trust myself

Definitely not.

Controller and NAND type

But all that said, for the non-computer savvy looking to replace a slow-as-shite mechanical HDD, you'll be pleased by any SSD on the market. I am of course still partial to Samsung despite that issue with the 840 Evo. If you do get an Evo for your wife, remember to run that performance restore software since it's unlikely every unsold SSD was pulled from stock to be updated. Crucial is also a fantastic brand -- Look at their MX100 or M500 (the former being the newer, slightly faster model). Between Samsung and Crucial, I've found very little reason to choose another brand unless you are on an extremely restricted budget -- in which case, you can almost always find a Corsair, Sandisk, Kingston, OCZ, or PNY drive of some type at a bargain price.

Well, you could pay a computer shop an exorbitant amount of money to clone your wife's hard drive to the SSD and install it in the laptop, or if you can follow directions, you could do it yourself. Only thing is, with a laptop you'd need to put the SSD in a cheap external USB enclosure first.

Good thread.

I'm watching slickdeals. Best deal so far is a 120gb for $25 after rebates but I hate mail in rebates.

My fallback is the crucial $49 120gb ssd but I'm going to keep my fingers crossed a cheaper one pops up.

I would only buy Intel, Samsung, or Crucial. They do the most testing and validation.

That's what kept me from the $25 newegg deal.. It was a corsair and reviews were mixed.

My 128GB SSD in my laptop for the past 3 years still has over 50% available. Why on earth would I need to wait for a 1TB?

Avoid SSD for a while. Drives aren't nearly big enough yet. I wouldn't be buying those till they start making a 1T for around 100.00. Til then you're just wasting your money.

What a joke. The performance jump in moving your operating system from a HDD to SSD is amazing. Probably the best advance in the last few years in computing.

For large volumes of storage, I have 4TB NAS in RAID 5 as well as an OS X server with additional 6TB storage on my local network.

Home network?

I've been bouncing around how I want my home network and computers to look when I build my house. Is your server on a Mac Pro?

Yep, home network.

It's not on a Mac Pro, just an old 2009 MacBook Pro. I have a set of wooden shelves with an 8-port gigabit switch, and I just put the MacBook Pro on a shelf and leave it open and plugged in permanently. It's plugged in via ethernet and the hard drives are only USB2.

Whenever I buy a new laptop, I just wipe the old one and migrate my server over to it. It's a cheap way of getting some use out of my older computers without any real additional investment. I don't use it for anything intensive and it's well ventilated, so I'm not worried about any heat issues involved with running a laptop at full load 24/7 or anything like that. I mostly use it for network storage (including network Time Machine shares without buying a Time Capsule), torrents, and as a ZNC IRC bouncer server.
