3.5L would be the obvious choice for me.

eta: ecoboost 4x4. the 3000+ payload is a must for me.

Ford and GM are jointly designing 10 speeds for RWD vehicles and 9 speeds for FWD vehicles. They should be available in about a year. They also jointly developed the 6 speeds they both currently use. Dodge's 8 speed is built by ZF of Germany.

WTF would someone buy a full size truck with a little piss ant motor in it? What is wrong with some of you? Why not just buy a Jap truck.

I'm with you, if I'm buying a truck it's going to have a V8. If I need something easy on gas I'll buy a beater car.

The only truck a 10 speed trans belongs in is an 18-wheeler. That's entirely too much for a light duty truck.

my truck has 7.3 liters and can tow a house, so I'm on the sidelines until i see something that impresses me. but 3000lb payload at 24mpg gasoline is nothing to scoff at imo. of course i've never actually driven it, so i'm reserving judgment.

Yep.

Now once we get the auto-clutch thing figured out where it doesn't cost so much to keep it going, we'll have something.

You need more than 325 hp and 375 ft lb of torque?

I'm sure you're aware that that is more power than virtually any 1500 series truck from the early 2000s.

For what? I was stating an opinion. You think a 10 speed automatic transmission belongs in a half ton truck?

Let's compare the F150 with the 2.7 and 6 speed to the Ram with the diesel and 8 speed. Here is the math. Using the current national average price of fuel according to the government (LINK ) of unleaded regular @ $2.894 and diesel @ $3.661 and calculating the price of fuel to drive 100 miles the cost are F150= $11.13 and Ram=$13.08. Now if you factor in the extra $4,000 for the diesel engine amortized over 100,000 miles the Ram cost moves up to $17.08 for 100 miles. If you use 200,000 miles then it is still $15.08. So far 500lbs more max towing capacity over 200,000 miles the customer pays (drum roll) $3900 MORE for fuel plus $4000 for the engine. Now when Ford plugs in the new 10 speed next year the difference will be even greater. I trust that I still know how to use a spreadsheet.

Make sure to add DEF to your calculation as well for the eco diesel. Think I read somewhere the DEF had to be refilled every 5k miles.

I don't know, because I'm not a mechanical engineer working for an auto company.

I'm assuming you have a late 90's/early 2000's F-250. The new gassers with max tow packages are capable of towing the same that 7.3 equipped trucks can tow.

Every 10,000 miles to coincide with oil change interval. Mopar DEF is about $8 to $10/gallon online and the trucks have an 11 gallon tank. So it's only an additional $220 per year if you drive 20,000 miles...obviously your driving style can make the DEF last longer or shorter...but it's really not a huge expense. People make too big a deal of it.

Okay, neither am I. But anything more than 8 speed will constantly be searching/hunting under load...doesn't seem like a good idea.

And most truck stops sell DEF for around 2-3.00 a gallon. Pump is right next to the diesel pumps.

I see your point, but I also trust that a couple hundred engineers working in a joint venture between the two top selling truck manufacturers wouldn't create and release a transmission that would make a truck drive like shite to the layman.
