Elon Musk has been ranting about killer robots again.

Musk posted a comment on the futurology site Edge.org, warning readers that developments in AI could bring about robots that may autonomously decide that it is sensible to start killing humans.

"The risk of something seriously dangerous happening is in the five year timeframe," Musk wrote.

Aware that internet commenters may mock him for his outlandish predictions, Musk defended his views, writing, "This is not a case of crying wolf about something I don't understand."

But minutes after he posted the comment, it was deleted.

The billionaire entrepreneur has made a habit of making apocalyptic comments about killer robots in recent interviews.

During a talk at a recent Vanity Fair conference, Musk warned the audience about killer robots. He suggested that advanced artificial intelligence could cause robots to delete humans like spam:

If its [function] is just something like getting rid of e-mail spam and it determines the best way of getting rid of spam is getting rid of humans ...

The interviewer went on to ask Musk whether humanity could use his SpaceX ships to escape killer robots if they took over Earth, but things don't look promising.

No--more likely than not that if there's some ... apocalypse scenario, it may follow people from Earth.

Here's Musk's deleted comment from Edge.org:

The pace of progress in artificial intelligence (I'm not referring to narrow AI) is incredibly fast. Unless you have direct exposure to groups like Deepmind, you have no idea how fast-it is growing at a pace close to exponential. The risk of something seriously dangerous happening is in the five year timeframe. 10 years at most. This is not a case of crying wolf about something I don't understand.

I am not alone in thinking we should be worried. The leading AI companies have taken great steps to ensure safety. The recognize the danger, but believe that they can shape and control the digital superintelligences and prevent bad ones from escaping into the Internet. That remains to be seen...

I posted this on the PT board:

quote:

Everytime he talks he has the same monotone expression and is so predictable that it is not even funny. Is it possible that he is Sky Net's first option to start the machine's take over? I know what you are thinking "wouldn't a robot be better at golf?" It is a cover feature.

#thinkaboutit he has the nuclear codes and Arnold can't stop him

think about it

Someone who really enjoys hearing himself speak.

Think Richard Branson, but without the skinny jeans.

I suppose the ai is being programmed with assumptions that humans are destroying the planet so it's logical they destroy us.

Robots with sensibilities? How do you program sensibility into a machine?

The danger lies in a human hacking the machine and programming it to kill.

fricking I-Robot is not going to become a true story.

This is just so stupid. I don't see why people project Human emotions and survival instincts onto robots.

Unlike humans, robots do not have survival instincts built by generations of evolution (or for bible nuts God). Even if you argue that they would "learn" survival instincts by observing humans, it would be no different than an idea such as "saving money is what you should do." It isn't instinct but an idea to learn, which means the AI won't be driven at all costs.

I mean it's not that outlandish. This guy knows more about technology than any person on this board, so to disregard his comments as crazy is pretty dumb I'd say. Maybe 5 years is pushing it, but I don't see why anyone thinks why a robot killing a human is some crazy science fiction. Advanced ai will definitely be seen in our lifetimes, and nothing runs perfectly.

The Japanese are building female sex robots, and Musk says they about to turn into maniacs.

Might as well just find a real woman, I guess.

Elon Musk-for those that aren't aware:

Founded a company that got contracts with the NYT and Chicago Tribune back in the mid-90's to provide internet-based "city guides" that was later acquired by Compag. He made $20 million dollars (in 1995 mind you) from the sale.

He went on to found an online payment/services company. It later merged with a company that owned a subsidiary with a name you may be familiar with: PayPal.

He pushed the growth of the PayPal company virally and when he sold it, eBay paid $1.5 billion, of which Musk made $165 million as he owned 11.7% of the shares (largest sharehodler).

From there, he invested $100 million of his own money into founding SpaceX. It became so successful since he founded it in 2002 that its now the main method that the international Space Station has its cargo delivered. It has a Nasa contract worth between $1.6 and $3.1 billion dollars.

From there he went on to found Tesla Motors in 2003. He took over principal ownership and product development when the stock market crapped out in 2008. His salary is $1/year. He owns 32% of the company and its valued at $18 billion dollars.

Less than 6 months ago he announced that he was allowing free good faith use of their tech patents for electric cars in an effort to speed development of electric cars.

He also founded SolarCity which is either the largest or 2nd largest Solar power system provider in the US.

The guy has been exposed to and developed some of the most groundbreaking technology around and he knows his sh!t. This isn't your local crank down the street with a Wordpress Blog.
