My family owns land SW of Alexandria and can consistently kill wood ducks when we have water in our slough/timber. However, I want to kill more of a mixed bag. We are considering building a lake or putting up a levee to hold water and shoot more birds. However, we don't want to spend the money to just keep killing woodies.

We see the migrators way up but not too many low flyers, and every pothole on Kisatchie seems to only have a few Woodrows. I'm wondering if this is a "if we build it, they will come" scenario or if it will just end up being a waste of money. Does anyone frequently kill ducks (besides wood ducks) around the SW Alexandria/Woodworth area? I know East towards Marksville they tear em up.

We're only 30 miles from Catahoula and Dewey Wills but I swear the birds stay N and E of the Red river before flying south to the rice fields and coast.

interesting question...I know the rice fields along I-49 near there hold ducks later in the year. Lots of spoonies but other ducks mixed in. I think likely scenario is that if it's not hunted often, there will be some big ducks come in later in the year to your hole, but not in big numbers.

I hunt pretty much due south of Woodworth and we kill everything. Not a lot of anything, but a mixed bag. I guess it depends on how far west it is, and how big you can make it.

Yeah I have my doubts. The big lakes around us are Kincaid, oden and Indian creek reservoir on Alexander WMA and from what I've heard/seen there are hardly ever ducks there in huge numbers.

We bulldozed a 125 yd long, 35 wide section of a bayou that floods in the winter, and haven't seen a duck in it since we did it 3-4 years ago. Whenever it draws down in the spring and summer; it fills up with smartweed. And still no ducks. The water is super muddy so maybe that's why they don't like it, but once again I have my doubts.

Indian Creek gets a mixed bag, but then again it's really close to the bottom land. How far removed from the lowlands would your place be?

McGraws Farm right there on I49 gets every variety of duck, but that is in open rice fields. If you're in the woods in a flooded slough, gonna get mostly woodies and grays. Maybe the occasional mallard.

How close are you to cocodrie(I believe that's what it's called)? It's a flooded timber lake but I think most if it is private. At least that's what it looks like when you ride around in it. I've hunted there in the past and shot wood ducks and a few mallards. May start asking around the area and gather some more evidence. I doubt it's ever going to be great but you may be able to attract a few more birds. Good luck.

I have a feeling our places are really close. I'm on bayou boeuf on the south side and have hunted it since I was a kid. We have a slough we damned up years ago (for fish) and it has brought us a couple of good years of grey ducks. Other than increasing the woodies that hang around though, thats about it.

we used to hunt some potholes and breaks in alexander forest just south of mcgraws. we always killed our 2 woodies with a few teal early then the big ducks would start coming in about 30 minutes to an hour later. this was several years ago when they used to have a lot of blinds on that property just north of mcgraws ponds that is all grown up now. when they quit hunting that the quantity dropped dramatically like after 1 year. we have killed almost every species in those potholes over the years. I quit hunting there for a few reasons. 1 it is a lot of damn work for 2 woodies and 2 the damn WLF would come in there and make you get out of the water EVERY FREAKIN DAY to check your shite. I mean the same guy checked me 7 days in a row and I still had to show him my license and stamps. The last day I told him that was borderline harassment.

Now for your original question, yes if you build it they will come. right away NO. I would plant it also and flood it and NOT hunt it for several years till they find it and start coming back each year. Also if they can ever get the water situation straight on 165 by the dump and get some birds working there that will also help. Let me know if you need someone to come TEST hunt it for ya. Good luck

Yeah I'm thinking it might be best to get a lease near Marksville or suck it up and brave the WMAs and deal with those yahoos

If they would ever get the water right on the fields just north of you east of 165 that would help tremendously. I have hunted in those ponds right next to the trailer place that has/had crawfish. didn't kill many there and have hunted by IESI but the water was never right there

Foot and I saw eleventy billion mallards in there one afternoon all the way in that back corner against the woods. I used to slaughter the woodies in there when it was owned by the veterinarian McGraw.
