No, but I'm not a fan of mashed potatoes, period

Some. I used to hate all potatoes as a kid, but I've grown to love them. I loooove french fries, roasted potatoes, even "smashed" garlicky potatoes (where they're somewhat mashed, but still lots of big pieces).

Mashed is just not my thing.

I don't like when restaurants put the protein atop anything. I don't want my fish with sauce on top of potatoes that soak up all the juices that I'd rather have on my fish and there are never enough of those juices to completely flavor the potatoes anyway.

Agree. Ruth's does their BBQ shrimp on top of the potatoes, and I can't stand it.

quote:

An exception is roast and rice and gravy. The roast and the rice benefit from the same gravy flavor, so it's okay for all of that to be next to each other.

Potatoes are really my only gripe. I'm fine with something over rice, grits, even veggies. I wouldn't even mind something braised served over roasted potato cubes or whatever. Just not over mashed.

The funny thing about mashed potatoes to me is that I love potatoes, but not lumpy soft ones. I don't want chunky potato soup. It has to be completely pureed. Same with stuffed potatoes which I love, but no lumps. I love roasted, crash hot potatoes, fried, au gratin or scalloped etc...just not mashed glopped on a plate. They don't stay hot and just generally aren't that great.

Ruth's Chris didn't always serve the bbq shrimp on the potatoes. I don't know when they started that. Makes that app way too heavy and ruins it. I've had it since and asked for the shrimp with no potatoes.

I had the fried soft shell crab with cocodrie sauce at Mansur's over the weekend. I knew it came with grits, but for whatever reason, I wasn't expecting it to be atop the grits. I should have known better. The entire underside of the crab wasn't crispy, though the rest of it was perfectly light and crisp. Terrific with what little of the sauce I could get on the crab, but most of it soaked into the grits which were already flavored. I'd order it again, but ask that the grits be served on the side. It all came in a big bowl. A plate would have been the right way to do it, IMO. The grits were delicious on their own, but the crab was huge and I didn't eat much of the grits.

That's just nastrola to me. Reminds me of what food looks like when plates have been scraped into the garbage.

I love my ceramic sectional plates!

And, those sectional plates they used to use in school cafeterias with about 5 sections were the best!

I'd like to see how it looks once it's poured out of the jar.

Only the one in BR does that from what I've seen. Metairie and Nola locations serve just the shrimp. The potatoes were interesting with the shrimp, but I prefer having french bread with my bbq shrimp.

Although my favorite Thanksgiving "leftovers" is mixing pumpkin pie with ice cream. Pretty damn good.

Well, that's a whole different dish from peas, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, corn, cranberry sauce, turkey, gravy and whatever else all mixed up in a jar. Nastiness.

You people don't need plates. Just use bowls, dump the entree and all sides into a bowl, stir and eat. Maybe just cook everything in one pot to save time and trouble.

I swear some of you have a permanent stick shoved up your arse. I would demolish five of these. Everything is all jumbled up on your plate for Thanksgiving anyway, what's the difference?

Well surely you mean plate(s) then because there is no way possible to not get cornbread dressing or stuffing on a green bean or turkey gravy on your corn.

I think this makes perfect sense and I don't understand all you people that mix things together or have 3 different juices running all into each other. May as well just cook it all together in one pot if you're going to do that!!!

I'm with you on this one GG. There are a few things that I don't mind getting a little mixed up, but by-in-large, I keep food separate. It bugs me when I take the time to make 3 or 4 different things and someone (like my Dad) mushes them all together. I took the time to make each one taste a certain way, dammit. And it throws off the consistency of each thing.
