Can we all agree about a few pieces of legislation?

1) I would propose that no bill proposed can be over 5 pages, and that any one bill contains only one piece of legislation. No more 'bridges to nowhere' in the last few pages of a 5000 page bill.

2) Term limits for all public offices

3) Get the government (state and federal) out of marriage.

What else?

Yes.

ETA: So the first reply of this thread basically means no, we can't all agree on a few pieces of legislation.

Don't pay farmers not to grow food.
Don't pay people to not work.
No governmental entity, state or federal, should ever give you up, let you down, open the floor, get on the floor, everybody walk the dinosaur.

I would let the bills be as long as they would like. However I would have an independently administrated quiz on each bill that each Congressman would have to pass before voting on it.

Haven't read the bill? You can't vote on it.

Definitely. The people should be able to elect whoever they like, for as long as they like.

I agree in principle, but the "science is settled" that incumbency has both been abused for far too long and is far too great of an advantage. I believe there should at least be a "sit out" provision - whereby a Rep, for example, can serve 3 terms, then must "sit out" 1 election. Ditto for a senator, 6 years, then "sit out" - I would even be open to going to a single 6-year term for President, set all Senatorial elections to that same year, coupling 100 Senate races and the President.

An educated populace would fix that. If I want to vote for a guy who's been doing a good job for 20 years, don't make me pick someone else just because we've made a law because we're afraid he's been in there because of stupid people.

The principle is the important part. Pragmatism is necessary at times, but I don't think this is one.
