The Nome City Council is moving forward with a plan to end tax exemptions for 40 local nonprofits, churches and other charities in the Seward Peninsula city.

With the city budget projected to run a deficit, the council spent a one-hour work session Monday looking at ways to increase tax revenue. After much debate, the council agreed to move forward with a draft ordinance removing sales tax exemptions from nonprofits and churches.

City Finance Director Julie Liew estimates the move could bring in about $300,000 a year. Nome is a regional hub city of about 3,800 people.

Clearly a violation of the first amendment. There is so much precedent here it is astonishing this is an issue.

Why the popcorn for such a well settled issue?

I'm wondering what the frick Nome is spending their budget money on if they're willing to flirt with a PR disaster over $300k.

As far as the 40 plus organizations go, that likely means a lot of groups which cover the "bush" areas of Alaska which are based in Nome because that is the air hub for the area.

This is not going to play out well for Nome's city council.

One of the other ideas these geniuses are considering is a repeal of the "airplane tax" waiver they have.

Lots of people park their planes in Nome because it is a regional hub and they don't charge them a property tax on the plane

If they repeal the tax waiver, they won't get nearly the $1.2m they think they will get because anyone parking the plane there only for tax purposes will move it if they change the rules.

The kind of person who travels all the way to Nome has their own reasons for it, and isn't going to care one way or the other about PR.

ETA: I'm thinking this is fallout from the oil tax breaks pushed through by the soon to be ex-governor. The plan barely avoided repeal via ballot measure, but it likely cost him his job in a close race.

Huh? How is this a violation of the first amendment?

I also doubt very much this would start an avalanche of political activity from the churches (you know, other than seeking to reinstate the tax break) since the much larger IRS status would be jeopardized.

Not saying this is a great move, but hardly a violation of the first amendment.

There is so much jurisprudence regarding taxation of churches and the first amendment out there I am truly puzzled by your post

Really wondering this as well. You can argue that not taxing them is a violation of the First Amendment, actually.
