The average American was given 14 days of vacation in 2013, yet took only 10, leaving four days unused. This doesn't apply to us OT ballers though as we average 8 weeks vacation per year.

Most Americans only get two weeks off right now. But many don't even take the full two weeks out of fear of losing their jobs. One in four gets no paid vacation at all, not even holidays. Overall, Americans have less vacation time than workers in any other advanced economy.

This is absurd. A mandatory three weeks off would be good for everyone — including employers. Studies show workers who take time off are more productive after their batteries are recharged. They have higher morale, and are less likely to mentally check out on the job.

This means more output per worker — enough to compensate employers for the cost of hiring additional workers to cover for everyone's three weeks' vacation time.

(CNN) -- Let's be blunt: If you like to take lots of vacation, the United States is not the place to work.

'Americans work like robots'
It's a totally different story in other parts of the world.

Nancy Schimkat, an American who lives in Weinheim, Germany, said her German husband, an engineer, gets six weeks of paid vacation a year, plus national holidays -- the norm. His company makes sure he takes all of it.

It's typical for Germans to take off three consecutive weeks in August when "most of the country kind of closes down," Schimkat said. That's the time for big trips, perhaps to other parts of Europe, or to Australia or North America.

Germans might also book a ski holiday in the winter and take a week off during Easter.
Schimkat's family back in the United States teases her that she's spoiled. But when she tells Germans that workers in the U.S. usually get two weeks of vacation a year, they cringe.

"They kind of have this idea that Americans work like robots and if that's the way they want to be, that's up to them. But they don't want to be like that," Schimkat said.

"[Germans] work very hard, but then they take their holiday and really relax. ... It's more than just making money for Germans, it's about having time for your family and it's about having time to wind down."

I get five weeks of vacation and at the end of the year, I am lucky to have any left. I take my vacation!

Think about all the government and state workers we have...

You really want to start paying for all those people?

TSA agents

Post office workers

DMV people.

Think about that.

My wife works in a publicly funded medical research facility. She has very good vacation time, and her boss repeatedly guilts her for using it, even going so far as to create illegal departmental policies to thwart her from awarding time off to her staff.

The obsession with superfluous work --work for work's sake-- is what makes America the GOAT.

Some folks around here think 14 days is too much.

I get 4 weeks yearly that runs from Dec 1 to Dec 1. This year I finally stretched them out to November. I took the last two full days on Monday & Tuesday of last week leaving me 1/2 day left. Usually I'm out by September or October at the latest.

The Free market dictates that vacations are unproductive.

The problem is that we working folk have to support so many people that are on permanent vacation that we don't have time to take off for ourselves.

I had three weeks at my first job out of college. The only kicker was it was at a CPA firm so you couldn't take any time from around November to May. Except for Christmas week. We all pretty much took the week between Christmas and new years. When I left there to work another job I was back to two weeks. Then it took 3 years to get back to 3 weeks. And at my current job the first year was two weeks and after that back to three. I take all of mine but usually have several sick days left. Those don't carry over but I'm never sick for 10 days a year. Really there are only about 3-4 days a month I can't be out unless I'm sick. So I take two one week vacations a year and sprinkle the other week in a day at a time around holidays to have some 4 day weekends. It seems plenty.

You know this isn't the real answer, welfare is used as a scapegoat, but supporting our military machine takes a lot more than welfare.

meh. if you want vacation, work in education. there's jobs out there that can get you a lot of time off if you want it. also, i believe that we as a group of people have lost the spine and will to negotiate for what we want. want more vacation? negotiate it in your contract. it's been done. i know an executive that wants summers off with his family with minimal work. so the took the pay of a vp, to be an email only guy during the summer.

the europeans do have more holidays and that's nice, meanwhile, i like being a part of the country that landed on the moon, changed the course of earth with the internet, and does lots of cool crap by being a bunch of hardworking explorers, inventors, adventurers, and innovators. Those that don't want that and want vacation instead, can go teach.

I get 3 weeks per year and make sure I use them all. Thankfully, I have a decent boss who stressed that I do that since they don't carry them over to the next year.

I get three weeks and have taken them all every year except for one.

My boss discourages leaving unused vacation time on the table. Part of the solution
